This puzzle was invented and patented in 1985 by Sergey Makarov. It was made as one-of-a-kind and never made it into mass production. Back then it was named "Makarov's cube". In 2009 a new version shown here was designed by Oskar van Deventer without knowing the 1985-version. For more information see the "Hedgehog Cube".
It looks like a Rubik's Cube, but it has an unexpected twist. When a mid plane is turned by 45°, other turns are possible. This way of turning mixes up the center and edge pieces.
In 2013 Witeden presented (in collaboration with Oskar) a mass produced version of this puzzle. Before there was only the version from shapeways which originally sold for 696.17 USD.
The package was used for four different puzzles: Mixup 3x3x3, Mixup 3x3x4, Mixup 3x4x4, Mixup 4x4x4.
Edge length: 66 mm
Weight: 169 grams
