Unlike the bandaged 4x4x4, all sixteen of these "cubies" are actual cubes.
The earliest known sample of this puzzle was made by Tony Fisher in the late 1990s. This sets the upper limit given as original year for this entry.
Even Tony does not know whether he was the first to build one. For Dutch Cube Day 2003 he rebuilt several samples with an Eastsheen 4x4x4 as core. These measure 68 x 68 x 136 mm and are shown in the images of this entry.
During the early ages of twistypuzzles.com (around 2000) building this puzzle was kind of the top achievement in puzzle building. Wayne Johnson, Ton Dennenbroek and Geert Hellings wrote articles about their methods to built these or related puzzles.
Rubik's Puzzle Building
Ton Dennenbroek has created a great set of tutorials on puzzle building, inlcuding one for this puzzle.
