The earliest trackable mentioning of this puzzle was in Cubic Circular #7 by David Signmaster. In Issue 7 the author states that he has seen one in 1983 in Poland.
For years the only way to obtain this puzzle was to hand-built one. During the 1980s Jean-Claude Constantin had this puzzle in his range of hand-built puzzles. Sadly the date of first prodcution is unknown.
In 2009 another mass produced version hit the market.
This puzzle is part of the series "Octgonal Edges". All modifications of this series are made by truncating an 3x3x3 on its edges. These truncations are symmetric as in the mass produced octagon from which the series takes its name.
The technical signature (Octagonal Edges Extended 3A5E8A00145E97) indicates where to cut the original cube.
Without the keyword "Extended" it is a variant made only by truncating the original cube. With the word "Extended" some sides left over from the original receive additional extensions to "delete" some of these remaining faces.
"Octagonal Edges 3A5E8A00145E97" is also in the museum. It is the "Hexagon Rhombic Dodecahedron"
