Crazy 4x4x4 I
Above:Solved
Click a thumbnail to see its larger version and description.
The first 4x4x4 with circles. It exposes the theoretical inner 2x2x2.

This puzzle was first named 4x4x4+2x2x2-Cube which is a fitting name since all pieces from a 4x4x4 are present and the pieces inside the circles behave like they were the pieces of the inner 2x2x2.
This is the first of a series of Crazy 4x4x4's. This variant still has indistinguishable face-pieces like any 4x4x4.

For the Crazy 3x3x3 so called "Plus"-versions were produced in which one or more circles turn with the surrounding layer. This principle has never been implemented with the Crazy 4x4x4. This was inevitable since all NxNxNs with even number of layers do not have any fixed centres. The Crazy 3x3x3 Plus variants rely on centre pieces of different kind.

The patent number given here steems from a soviet union patent granted in 1988 to Andrej Sergeev. It is assumed that (re)inventor didn't know about this earliest trace.
Edge length: 67 mm
