At first glance, it looks rather like Trajber's Octahedron, but look again. It's actually "turned" 45°, creating a much more interesting puzzle.
This puzzle is closely related to the pillow cube. If extensions are placed on the top and bottom face and the pieces on the surrounding ring the result is this octahedron.
Although Anthony Greenhill realized this creation independent from others he was not the first one to conceive it. In CFF#25 (in December 1990) he later discovered a drawing of this puzzle although that drawing never made it into a physical implementation.
This puzzle is part of the series "Octgonal Edges". All modifications of this series are made by truncating an 3x3x3 on its edges. These truncations are symmetric as in the mass produced octagon from which the series takes its name.
The technical signature (Octagonal Edges Extended A528A00145294) indicates where to cut the original cube.
Without the keyword "Extended" it is a variant made only by truncating the original cube. With the word "Extended" some sides left over from the original receive additional extensions to "delete" some of these remaining faces.
The non-extended version is the Pillow Cube.
Edge length: 83 mm (equator)
Edge lengths: 63 mm (others)
