A puzzle with this function and shape was announced in 1982 by Uwe Meffert in his catalogue which became legendary for its wealth of mechanisms and puzzles most of which never were produced. This puzzle was stickered easier and was to bear the name "Pyraminx Magic Icosahedron".
Almost two decades later Anthony Greenhill presented the first working sample that he built by hand. The term Kilominx had not been coined back then. The only usable reference puzzle was the Impossiball with a mechanism that was simple but fell out of use since then.
Ten years after Greenhill's creation this type of puzzle (while ignoring the shape) became known as Kilominx. Another ten years later (2019) a mass produced version named "Corner Only Megaminx (D5A1)" hit the market. See images 3-5.
