This puzzle was first realized as a handmade transformation. First a 4x4x4 has to be truncated into the Master Cuboctahedron (see the database). Afterwards extensions have to be built and glued on the faces still left over from the original puzzle. Since this is the same procedure as Trajber's octahedron can be built from a 3x3x3 this is called Trajbers 4x4x4. The first two images show a rebuilt sample, not the first one.
The first sample was made with extensions out of wood.
For a long time one had to build this transformation by yourself to obtain one. In 2010 industrial production of these puzzles started with slightly different measurements. It also came in a stickerless version.
