Back in the early 1980s Aleksandr Ordynets filed a patent (SU980739) which shows a sketch of this puzzle. It is unknown whether he ever made a working prototype.
The first working Master Skewb was built by Katsuhiko Okamoto in 2003. For almost seven years it was a very rare puzzle. Only the sample built by Katsuhiko existed. In december Andrew Cormier presented a master skewb made from his own design. Five months later Tony Fisher presented his version made from a face turning octahedron which became available at that time.
All these redesigns increased the communities wish to get this puzzle mass produced. This wish came true near Christmas 2010.
The puzzle itself is a corner turning hexahedron like the namegiving skewb but has 2 cuts per axis compared with the one cut of the normal skewb. If the edges and X-Faces are ignored the puzzle solves identical to the skewb. It is closely related to the face turning octahedron and the rex cube which were invented a long time after this.
