I just wanted to share this with you: A design for a 3x4x5. It's pretty small each cubie being 15mm, with the exception of the 3-layer direction which is slightly 'stretched' to 17mm per cubie. It's a bit visible on the computer screen but I think that smart stickering could hide it. It could be made perfectly square just by scaling it up a bit, but I didn't want to get the bulky 19mm cubies.

The bad thing about this design is is that it uses a whopping 19 unique parts (not including the core which will have to be stolen from some 3x3). I think printing just the masters will cost around $110, sparse. I'm considering releasing the files, which have proper tolerances and fillets of course.

Oh wow, I knew someone had to be designing one of these

My idea entailed a sort of cubic 3x3x5 mech, but I never got round to designing it, I look forward to seeing this being made :P

TomZ, great job, and very interesting!
If you will release the files, please consider releasing the version with uniform cubies as well. (maybe, Eastsheen size?)

Whoa, neat. :)

Just out of curiosity... what would it look like if it were cubic?

seems expensive to buy full prints for a puzzle like that

I think you've just made the design for all higher order Lxnxm puzzles. Very good work, and I love the look of it, if these were released, I'd definitely buy the masters and cast it.

Wow, that's awesome! However if you do release the files, can they be cubies the same size as 3x3, or another cube?

TomZ, the way you modified this concept is brilliant.
I am pretty sure that because of such designs, puzzles like the 3x4x5's
will soon become much easier to acquire than before.

:)

...If the cubie divisions on this were perfectly cubical, would the mechanism allow the puzzle to shapeshift at all?

No, but my new design does. I've gone trough a couple of iterations and have now found something that will allow shapeshifting.
