Due to the reduction of external parts, the puzzle can function either as a 3x3x2 or bandaged 3x3x3. The bandaging is both due to the overhanging external parts and due to the core alignment piece present in the original puzzle, appearing on this puzzle between the green-orange-yellow mid-edge and the internal green-orange edge.
