The octahedron made out of a 3x3x3 is one of the oldesr known shape variants. Maybe every basic cubic puzzle has been transformed into an octahedron. To find more puzzles to modify the inventor of this one decided to transform a puzzle which is by itself a shape variants, in this case a Windmill cube.
