It looks like Gear Cube but implements an ingenious twisting method which can't be explained in one sentence.

This puzzle has a strong optical resemblance to the Paso Doble, the Slice Gear Cube and the Multi Gear Cube Kit.
Nonetheless the Variomatic Cube has an even crazier concept of twisting although nobody thought that could be possible.
Like in the preceeding puzzle opposite faces are connected and therefore are twisted connected to each other. Compared with the preceeding puzzles the gear ratio is not fixed but varies while being twisted!
When one side is twisted 90° the opposite side is twisted 180°. The next twist of the first side twists the opposite side by 90° too. The third twist of the first side has to be by an angle of 180° to twist the opposite side by 90°.
After these three moves the cycle starts anew.

The designer himself stated, that the name of this puzzle is a tribute to the variomatic transmission system by the Dutch car manufacturer DAF. Note that the variable-gear-ratio mechanism is very different from the DAF variometic system.
