The concept of the X-Cube adapted to a 2x2x2 with spherical cuts.

The first X-Cube was a transformation of a 3x3x3 and was made by Jürgen Brandt. He made it by truncating the edges of the original puzzle.
In this case the creator started with a Rubiks 2x2x2 and extended it into this shape which new size is identical to a standard 3x3x3. The "cuts" which the creator seem to have used are spherical and the stickering scheme fits into this too.
