Hi everyone!
Today I have another octahedron to show you! I tried to make a 5 layers FTO, make it proportional seemed impossible to me, so I made it not proportional.
The puzzle is made of 226 parts and 224 stickers. The centers are not fixed, for example, the red and orange centers could stand on two adjacent faces when scrambling. Also, even fully scrambled, each face can only have 4 colors on it.
The measurements are the same as my previous octahedrons: edge length: 97mm, distance between two opposite faces: 80mm, for a weight of 222g.
You can see the video here.
And find it in the marketplace.
Enjoy

Who cares about proportionality if you can have such a puzzle?
Well done. Thank you for images and measurements.

Wow, I've seen mass-produced puzzles that didn't even looked that well-made. Congrats on this feat, and keep up the great work!

This is a limitation built into all octahedral geometries. The maximum orbit size is always 12, not 24 like you'd expect from the full octahedral symmetry group. Even the Complex FTO (all 256 pieces of it) has this limitation. I think the octahedron can be best understood as two fused tetrahedrons. Pieces like edges are members of both tetrahedra where the two intersect (which limits them to a total of 12). Other pieces have 24 copies but 12 of them belong to each tetrahedron and they can't mix.

Wonderful, as always! As a lover of octahedral shapes, your latest puzzles please me very much.
I've been considering trying my hand at a 5-layer vertex-turning octahedron at some point, but that's just an idea for now. And the 5-layer FTO is undoubtedly a much more complex project. Congratulations, and the finish (plastic / movement quality / stickers) looks fantastic, as always.
Is there any sort of standard for naming these? Mefferts' pyraminxes go Master (4), Professor (5), and then Timur Evbatyrov's ones go Royal (6) and Emperor (7). And the Shengshou even-layered dodecahedrons go Master, Elite, (more to come?).
This person is making a proportional one, btw: http://twistypuzzles.com/forum/viewtopi ... 15&t=30011 . It appears that it would actually be a different puzzle, and not just a shapemod (see amount of pieces and how they are located relative to each other).

Thank you very much everyone, I'm glad you like this puzzle

For the name, I hesitated a bit but if you type "royal" in the museum you will find the Royal Tetrahedron, Royal Skewb and Royal Pentultimate, they all have 5 layers. Even the Royal Pyraminx has only 5 mechanical layers, the tips are trivial. I was a bit confused by these names but I decided to go for "Royal Octahedron".

Yes, I saw it recently, it motivated me to present my version faster
Anyway, as you said, this will not be the same puzzle. The Royal Skewb is also close to my design, but not identical.

Pure, old school, higher order platonic solid.
Beautiful.
