The auction that I won said that they were not for sale in stores and only available to Nintendo Club Japan Members. Whatever that is
I don't think you will find too many of them unless they release them to the general public.

Nintendo club is a site that you can only join by owning Nintendo products.
Every time you buy a Nintendo product, you get a code including in the packaging. By entering this code on the Nintendo Club website, you gain points (Stars I think (for Europe anyway)). You can then redeem these points for prizes.

Awesome. I have a million Nintendoproducts with the code youre talking about. I should join the NA one and get that if they have it.
Also is this it?: http://youtube.com/watch?v=jRGZ9mHIvQM

In my opinion, the first ten billion barrel looked harder, because of the grouped balls. Is this true for anyone else?

Or wait, there may be groups on both. Can someone give me the number of balls and groups for each of these puzzles (star and barrel)?

That video is most definitely of a new star-shaped billion barrel with a slightly different form factor. I wouldn't say the new shape is completely cosmetic - it makes the puzzle far nicer to grip and move.

At first glance, it just seems like the puzzle got some plastic surgery. There was no visual evidence that the puzzle is different that the original puzzle wise.
If it's the same or not, I still want to nab one for my collection. Don't get me wrong.

I want one too. The puzzle is just beautiful. My wife might let me store in the main part of the house.

Perrin Kaplan of Nintendo America wrote: You know we've taken a really close look at what they're doing in Europe and what they're doing in Japan. You have to remember that, geographically, we're much bigger here and cost-wise, it is much more expensive to run a program like that. We try to do pre-sale with our retailers as often as possible. You're talking about a scale that is much larger. But we do look at the differences in markets and what consumers are liking. It's just a difference in scale.
Sorry guys.

I had visions of this disappearing from the promos, and never being able to buy one again that wasn't brand new. The fact that I saw this seller selling them for $20 less than another, with insurance included in the shipping sealed the deal.

Frankly, I believe this is the case where I can tell that there are other at very similar price on eBay. Just see the completed auctions (links available here on the forum) and figure out the correct search string. The search will turn up what you're looking for.
I got mine from Japan about a month ago or so.

Arrived today!
Just confirming that the original barrel and the star barrel are identical. The only difference is that the balls are a little bit transparent when compared to the original one. A very nice variant, and I agree that there is a better grip to it because of its star shape.
