...so I built one too! This puzzle is made from a (you guess) and consists of 60 individually cut pieces that were then bonded, filed round on the edges, and assembled. To keep things accurate, the bits were cut on a cnc mill, so everyting was perfect. However, a few minor errors were made by myself during the bonding stage, so alignment is only *almost* perfect. Oh well.

Anyway, I will be making 5 more of these in the next few weeks, and placing them up for sale on ebay as a buy-now item for a fixed price. So, if you like it, you'll have at least a few chances to get one for yourself. properly finished and sticker-ed of course, though!

Cheers!

Far too big of a hint. ;)

Looks great, though.

Oh my God! It is indeed a dodecahedron UFO!
Well done! All aliens from outer space would be proud of you!

Good Job. But I would disagree with the original unless you mean white.

Well how about that, it *was* done before! Honestly, I came up with this idea about 4 months ago, and have been waiting for a chance to make it--I promise you that I didn't scoop your idea, but came up with the same one independently. Regardless, props to you for getting it out there first, and for what it's worth mine is a different size / material / construction technique, so it is technically quite different anyway. :)

That is, this one is a bit larger than a skewb ultimate--each pentagon edge is 42mm--and all the bits are made out of ABS plate vs. poured urethane. And it's white! :)

Anyhow, as for the price, I'm still sort of waffling about it, so no decisions on that front. But five will be the magic no., as I started with six UFO's, and I'm keeping one for me--this one with the alignment errors, to be precise! :)

Glad you all like it, thank you very much for the kind words!

Cheers!

Funny how things always look better with some stickers. And colour. Enjoy!

OK, after a question regarding how these are made, I figured I'd give out this bit of instructions.

First, the shapes were milled out on a chunk of 3mm ABS sheet, like so:
Image

As you can see, the bits need to have the sticky tape used to hold it to the pallet removed, and all the excess material trimmed of. I'm getting over my fear of Stanley knifes, so that helps. Once that is done, you are left with a pile of bits:
Image

Now you need something to attach the bits to, that being the UFO. I figured out how to get them apart safely, like so:
Image
Image

Getting back to the milled bits, not all the angles are correct, since milling them to the proper angles would involve increasing the time on the CNC mill by many times, and that's not on. That is, I only had a 15 and 90 degree carbide cutter handy at the time, so we have to file out the surfaces by hand, like so:
Image

Of course, careful planning in advance has kept the filing to a minimum. Also, the bumpy bits on the UFO have to go:
Image

And then we put the thing together. It's easier to say than do, as this one clearly demonstrates. You can see where I got the top cap in the wrong spot, and that was after putting the sides on wrong--notice the pulled apart grey glue! No biggie, I got it right eventually, and started paying more attention to what I was doing instead of my new Salmonella Dub CD.

Repeat 12 times, file off the overhangs (two per piece), sand, paint, assemble, sticker, and done!

Like I said, not as fun as I had originally thought it would be, since it's quite a tedious process. But oh well, the end result is a REALLY slick puzzle!

Cheers!

Nice work. Sanding is no fun -- I feel your pain. But the puzzle looks great! Salmonella Dub is great, too.
