Post subject: Pyraminx Crystal Core? (Epiphany) Posted: Mon Jul 24, 2006 11:18 pm |

It's the Dogic core. I was looking at this the other day when I was grounded for staying out till 3am.
Ok, there's 4 different pieces on the Meffert's Dogic, and also the core.
Theres: Triangle Tips, Triangle Centers, Internal piece #1 (Holds tips), and Internal piece #2 (Holds centers).
I hoped to show pictures to make this clearer, but at the moment this is not possible.
Anyways, I saw if you were to remove the Triangle tips, fused internal piece #2 with 2 internal piece #1's, this creates a solid 'edge'. Now if you were to build up on this newly created edge, as well as buildig up on the pre-established triangle centers, this is in fact a Pyraminx Crystal.
Thoughts? Am I going somewhere, or am I just stupid?
It's kind of hard to follow if you have never assembled or seen the internal mechanism of a Dogic before. Sorry. Like I stated, I wanted to post pictures to help with this, but I can't.

I see what you mean and it works but its still a lot of buildup that is necessary.

oleg made it from a dogic. when you scroll down to his 2. post he sais probably better to make from a megaminx though. Ask him if he built his one like you said.

Althought I don't see how you would get the edges in if you were to use a Megaminx core.
I'd try to make it, except I've never made ANY puzzle before. No altercations or mods at all. That, and I'm in no finacial condition to be buying all the stuff to build at the current moment.

I'd probably soil myself if Meffert started producing the things. I want one so bad.

Here's the problem I'm talking about with the Megaminx as a core. When turning on the green slice, the pink outlined pieces can't be equivilant to Megaminx pieces. Ergo you can't just extend and over lap the centers.

Rest assured, you CAN do it with Megaminx.

But how???
I can't see how it can be done, less it involves aditional pieces or moding of centers so that there almost are none left even inside the puzzle...

I'm not saying it CAN'T be done. I'm just saying it can't be done by just OVERLAPPING THE CENTERS.

Well, what I (and xcool?) havn't understood yet is that on a megaminx a faceturn moves five corners and five edges, but the brilic turns IN ADITION to these pieces also the five remaining edges that have contact with the five corners that is affected by the turn...

Bingo. It's the additional pieces on the "Second layer" that pose the problem.
Harra and I are on the same page.

The internal mechanism of the Megaminx is set up like this:
The centers hold the edges in place and the edges hold the corners in place.
The Crystal would need to be slightly different (at least the patent shows this)
The centers (hidden) hold down the corners and the corners hold the edges in place. This allows the edges below the corners to move around.
To make a Crystal from a Megaminx, you would need to round down the centers, add to the "foot" of the corners to connect them to the centers, extend the corners over the centers and cut them down to the correct shape with a groove for the edges, add a wedge to the edge pieces so they stay in the groove between corners, and extend and reshape the edge pieces to fit between the reshaped centers.
Scramble, Solve, Repeat.

Adam I'm getting the general idea there. Sounds a lot more complex to mod, but if it were to be mass produced, it might be good. I/we will just have to see.
[edit] Would the edges be in contact with the centers at all? Or just the corners?

So the Minx edges are there, but comletely pointless and unviewable in this mod, and the Crystal edges are free floating because of the Minx/Crystal corners?
Am I following thus far?
[edit] Someone should pass word to Ewe Meffert after we sort this out. I want it to be produced.

Not pointless, but unviewable. Yea, I just read that and caught my error. They would just be unviewable, but still pointful (is that the word?) because they would be holding the corners so they could hold the Cyrstal corners.
P.S. Completely irrelevant, but I was thinking if you were to sand one of these down to a sphere, you would have a "Magic Crystal Ball". Hahaha.

I think the word you're looking for is "poignant" but I don't know how to spell it...
Nope, I'm talking rot. It's "effectual". Can't spell that, either.
