Is the Crazy Comet part of this series or is it a different puzzle entirely?

EDIT: I realize now [a year later] that they're not related.

It is great that these are finally coming out. Will there be a discount for those of us who want to buy all 8 together?

How long until they are available in black plastic?

Sweeeeeet! So many new puzzles coming to light lately! Similar to how Mf8's Sun Cube is an unbandaged version of the Bermuda cubes, I think this unnamed puzzle (also from MF8) would be the unbandaged version of the Bermudaminxes.

$38 seems a bit high for a series like this. There is no way I can afford to buy all 8 [$304!!!]. At least with the Crazy Megaminxes you could exchange center pieces and make new puzzles. I doubt you can do this with the Bermudaminxes because of the irregularly shaped pieces. I think a kit could be done with the equivalent of ~4x the parts of 1 puzzle. You would need 4 different version of each corner, 3 versions of each edge, and 4 center types for each color. I would gladly pay 4x the cost of one puzzle to be able to make all variants, rather than this silly planet stuff.

I really wish Mf8 would just release kits to make all the puzzles instead of planets. It just makes more sense for the consumer :(

Cool! This puzzle as been annonced a while back. Why is it only getting on the market now? I doubt they did many prototypes of these be ause the mechanism is not that complex. What I find fascinating is that if I'm right, 2 years ago (around the same date) dayan was releasing their bermuda cubes. And I approve 38$ is quite expensive  .

The price seems correct for the complexity of the puzzle, but I agree it makes collecting the entire series challenging for some of us. Perhaps there is an optimum subset of puzzles to buy that can be used to make each member of the series. It would be nice if we could sign up for a "BermudaMinx of the month" subscription deal where we would get one a month for eight months, with a bit of a discount over buying them individually. One thing I can say... I will definitely be getting one... or more. :D

Ouch! My wallet is screaming again! :D these look very cool, I'd love to see a picture showing the layout of each puzzle in the series on all sides, like with previous planet series. I too will wait for black versions though, and doubt I would get the whole series, the more difficult planets are likely beyond my powers anyway :)

These look a bit interesting but I've never done any of the Bermuda cubes before - would people suggest that it would be best to go for the cubes first?

If the minx versions are worth getting then I'd wait for black plastic and would not be able to get them all so could people suggest what order they should be bought in? I'm really not very good at bandaged puzzles and so these may be too much for my meagre skills!

I assume we would need to know exactly what the shapes are before you can give advice. :D

Mercury is exceptionally easy. Venus is not so bad. I have the others, but I've never gotten around to them. Maybe now would be a good time! Burgo gave his recommendations on solving order here.

The puzzles are up on HKNowStore. Each listing has pictures with a top and bottom view, so you can see the full layout of each.

From the photos, it does look like the edges and corners are made of separate parts. Perhaps a few of the puzzles could be used to assemble each member of the series. You'd pick each edge half based on the adjacent face and snap them together.

Looking at the chart that MF8 provided, I see that six of the planets have at least one unique face and thus can not be assembled from parts of other puzzles. The "essential six" are:

Jupiter – light green parallelogram
Mercury – red parallelogram
Mars – red trapezoid
Saturn – light blue trapezoid
Uranus – grey parallelogram
Earth – grey trapezoid

The other two puzzles can be made by disassembling three of the "essential six":
  • Venus can be made from: Saturn, Jupiter and Mercury
  • Neptune can be made from: Jupiter, Mars and Uranus

It is still slightly less expensive to buy the six puzzles at full price than the set of eight, but making the two "free" puzzles takes three puzzles out of play and, due to the overlap, Venus and Neptune cannot both be made at the same time.

I'm intrigued by these puzzles, but I really want to see some video or reviews so I can decide between a few individual planets or the whole set.

Indeed pete, I was trying to find some way to do that, but i couldn't, so you've sone better than me.

It's very difficult to see which ones might be easier or harder too, with the bermuda cubes it was relatively easy i think to see that at least mercury and venus were at the easier end of things, these I have no clue.

Here is the table I made showing the face type for each of the 12 Megaminx faces. I think it is a bit easier to see patterns and relationships in a table. For example, the "essential" puzzles are the ones that have a unique entry in one or more columns.

Here is the table with the entries for regular Megaminx faces blank. This highlights the unique face types.

All 8 puzzles can be bought from zcube.cn for $203 (using coupon code ZCUBE or LUCKY neither seem to have an expiry) - this site offers paypal too and shipping time is about 3 weeks to Europe (same as most sites)

Pete, maybe MF8 Dayan deliberately made them different so that we can't just buy two and make all the others out of them, like there excellent crazy megaminx series?
Any news on a crazy gigaminx series?

I suspect this is exactly what they did. I completely understand it from a company's perspective, but I reckon there'll be quite a few people who may not buy any because there's no real understanding of which ones are better or different. I think I would have quite happily paid $150 for a kit to make all puzzles.

rline, maybe this could be a market that these puzzle companies should look into. As Tony fisher said once, taking a puzzle apart and putting it together again is as much an enjoyable challenge as it is to solve it.

ps rline, thanks for your excellent tutorials, especially eitans star.

They definitely should. Cubetwist did it with the 333 DIY bandaged kit. My own feeling is that most people would be willing to pay "what's fair" for a kit of puzzles. But at $38 a pop for these bermuda minxes, it's a lot of money to shell out, particularly when you don't know what kind of solving challenge each one has. If I paid $38 and it was a super-easy solve, I'd be pretty annoyed. But if I paid $150 for a kit, and got all the puzzles, well even if some were easy and others were hard, I'd feel satisfied. Surely it would be a lot less assembly work for the companies as well.

Now there is a really good picture of all 8 of these puzzles on Champion's Cube Store and I think I can see what the special centres do. It appears the trapezoid centre blocks turning of two adjacent faces and the parallelogram centre blocks turning of two faces spaced one face apart. Of course, the presence of multiple special faces complicates this analysis and I could be completely wrong. In any case, my interest continues to be more and more piqued.

I've bought the set. They've arrived, I haven't stickered them yet, but I might do it tonight.

I don't see that they will be hugely different to each other solving wise, just because of the amount of space on a Megaminx, as opposed to a Cube. I think it will just be a matter of `solving the harder bits first` and then saving `similar easier bits` until last.

They will be fun though, and fun is what most of us are after :) .

I suppose everybody else has noticed this, but I just became aware when I started stickering, that every piece has the type of joining that can be made into `coloured plastic`. It's possible that those who want coloured plastic might be able to wait for this, before running out and buying the stickered versions. I would have waited for that, had I known, or suspected before. It certainly wasn't part of the planning with the way the Bermuda Cubes were constructed. But be noted.. it is here. And given recent form with the `Wheel of Wisdom`, it's a chance, and we probably won't be forewarned.

My experience with Bermuda Cubes have put me off this minx collection. If they turn well I might give one a go.
