Who would be willing to help me out! I've been scratching my head for a week trying to figure out how you could build a face turning icosahedron with out cutting off the corner pieces. I've tried using a shells mechanism, but still can't ever get the cuts close enough to the edge without messing up everything else.

This is just for my own puzzle building knowledge - I figure I can't invent something new if I don't understand the basics first! I've tried searching but haven't found what I"m looking for... I'm sure it's out there already but...

Thanks!

Have you tried using radial cuts? That is, a cut which is a radius of the origin. This would allow you to (I think) create enough room for the corners.

Hi Jabeck

Are you talking about this one?

That's the Radiolarian 2, and it does have corners.

Or are you talking about a puzzle like the Cornered Radiolarian (a variant on Radiolarian 1):

I guess you mean, without the corners falling off. Speaking for myself, it wasn't easy! Maybe it was easier for Jason, but this was my first twisty design.

Basics, huh? I guess things have really changed in three short years. I can't keep up with the state of the art today. But remember that until 2010, nobody had ever made a face-turning icosahedron before.

Just agreeing with Bob. (with apologies for not mentioning your simultaneous design) I wouldn't call this a good first design exercise really. Try a Skewb!

And it wasn't my first, but it wasn't easy anyway. There's something about this geometry that does NOT want stable faces and corners. And the cornered radiolarian ended up amounting to trivial corners because of this.

I used a deeper puzzle on the inside of my Radiolarian 2. I know Oskar also used that approach on his Icosaix.

Sorry- just getting back to this - yes I meant the Radiolarian 2

So, how did you do it? Still not understanding...

And can you please post a basic pic of a radial cut? I don't quite get that either...

Thanks!

Here you go:

This is what the cut sketch looks like, the light blue line represents the "radial" cut.
This is the outer puzzle:

Here's a look at the internals:

Here's a corner piece, you can see that it has a neck which holds it in place:

I hope this helps.

Yes this helps a bunch - thanks! I think my main problem is that I was trying to do it with only one shell - Would you consider this a two shelled mech? I'm still coming to grips with how multiple shells affect things - how deep to make the inner puzzle, etc... It takes a lot of experimentation doesn't it!?
