I made a break in stickering the ETRT and finished

Greg's FF 5x7x9 cuboid.

size: 92mm x 117mm x 140mm
weight: 525 grams

It supports shapeshifting in all three dimensions.
Video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8Toqvsvgus

This is my second expensive puzzle I ever ordered at shapeways.
Therefore it will be not available in my shapeways shop. It is very easy to assemble and you don't invest much work in lubrication tasks.
If anyone is interested please send me a PM.

Doesn't clauswe have one of Oskar's Over The Top puzzles? At least that is what I think he's referencing.

GREAT looking puzzle by the way. This is something I'd love to see mass produced myself but I'm not really expecting that to happen. But I'd love to be proven wrong.

Would it be ok to ask for some mechanism pictures? I'm curious if this uses some modified v-mech or at this size Oskar's floating anchor mech applied to a cuboid might be another interesting way to go.

Carl

You are right. The 17x17x17 are my most expensive shapeway models.

Carl, here is an internal picture.
Greg used some modified v-mech and not Oskar's floating anchor mech.

Have just seen this - amazing puzzle!

But why doesn't the video show any of the shapeshifting? :(

Great stuff. Always good to see a new cuboid, especially a flat one. What will the title of your post be though when you get a 7x9x11?

Yes Tony, this will be a problem to find a new topic name.

But I think it will not be possible to make the next bigger shapeshifting cuboid. Please proof me wrong!!!!!
Ok, you can sand down a 11x11x11. But the result will be not a flat one.

To handle such a complex CAD file witch so much different pieces was the biggest problem Greg has to solve while designing.

His computer was extreme busy and slow to managed several tasks.

Fantastic work.
This is indeed an extraordinary puzzle and a gem for each collection.
Is there a chance to order one?

Wow, only 600 EUR! I might get two, one for weekdays and one for Sunday  Seriously, this is a great puzzle, and the only way you'll own one is via Shapeways. Too bad I'll never own one

Make that €650 for both parts PLUS VAT and postage. Probably no change out of €750!

Oh dear! I'll join the crowd as not able to afford it!
Maybe one of our Chinese puzzlers will make a deal and mass produce it?

Ah, I missed that hint when I scrolled through this thread on my smartphone:)
Can you make it available in WSF polished also?
I am sure, it will avoid a lot of lubing.

Frank, shapeways said that it is not possible to print it in polished. I don't know the reasons. But it is not neccessary. You will have great results in WSF with lubrications.

There are some irritations with the price. Without shipping and any local tax it will cost 540 Euro.

But I stopped selling of this puzzle in my shapeways shop this morning.

We are in discussions with chinese factories about potential mass production.

I had 3 times bad expierience when I bought for a high price an unique puzzle. And some month later I found it for a very cheap price in a chinese puzzle store. The same thing happend when I won an auction for an expensive puzzle and weeks later it is available for less a quarter of the price in a shapeways shop.

Great puzzle :D and I really hope that there is a chance getting it mass-produced.

I just counted eleven of my custom puzzles that were mass-produced later. I never bought them as "unique", though. I did never feel bad about this and was happy for others who could get them at an affordable price.

Well, this is indeed an important information and regarding the price it is worth waiting.

Anyway, I think it should be sufficient to add this info to the Shapeways description and leave it to the potential customer to order a print or not. I also have some puzzles (as probably most collectors who own a larger collection) which have been mass produced later. Sometimes I got a refund (e.g. from Tony who is very serious about his customers), in other cases this was not the case. Additionally, it is a difference, if a puzzle builder decides on his own to let a puzzle being mass produced or if the design was simply copied (=stolen).

And sometimes I was happy to have the original instead of a badly copied mass production.

Any other of your puzzles with a similar status?

It would be great at last to get a legit cube / cuboid beyond "7". Tempted to get my Dremel fired up in anticipation.

.. and finally fuse them all together

Having a puzzle with the size of a brick then, you can also start to spare money and buy them to build a new puzzle working booth for your garden.
THAT would be representative..

Frank, I will follow your poposal and will activate the model in my shop with a remark of potential mass productions.

No, I am not planning the same with any other puzzles.

NICE!!! I would love to have this puzzle.

I assume you contacted the "chinese factories" and not the other way around? Are you planning on fronting the costs to get this mass produced or is the other party willing to take this risk for you? Considering the number of parts and the cost to make molds this sounds like an expensive endeavor and as much as I want this puzzle I'd hate to see a fellow collector loose his shirt on a deal like this.

Carl

This is a very important point. After many years of puzzle making and seeing all the twists and turns many of which are unforeseen I am tempted to add a simple covering clause to all my new puzzles - "This puzzle may or may not be mass produced sometime in the future". I guess it would have a negative affect on sales but it would leave total guilt free freedom for future decisions.

Actually 'they' contacted me, after recieving a suggestion from someone who saw it on the forum, the reason why Claus said 'negociations' is because we first want to know if this is viable for mass production (number of parts, shape / size of parts / corner cutting etc...)

Tony,

of course it is reasonable to have the freedom to decide at any time for mass producing a puzzle. I would solve this with a general disclaimer on your website like "For any puzzle published after XXX I keep the option for a mass production. Puzzles before XXX/listed here are not affected and the exclusiveness of the puzzle builds" or any similar sentence.

But of course we are living in different (puzzle) times as some years ago and any more or less experienced collector/buyer is aware of the fact that this can happen. And this is not the point here.

Claus said, that there are some negotiations and it is beyond the pure opportunity to have it mass produced. So this is an of course very fair warning not to spend much money and be disappointed or even angry afterwards. So a dedicated remark regarding this puzzle is advised to avoid discussions and complaints. And also his remark, that it is currently not planned for any other puzzles of his Shapeways shop.

These two levels of information/warning should be distinguished.
