I heard about it on the radio at work and had just been looking for videos of it. Astonishing. I was assuming it was related to the asteroid that is doing a flyby this evening, but apparently they are coming from opposite directions and it is just pure coincidence. :shock:

Based on the angle of the meteor and the fact that it disintegrated in the air (the loud bang) this video is probably fake.

That would be one of the biggest, most well executed fakes I've ever seen.

Plus, the timing seems right: from impact with the atmosphere 10km above the earth, the shock wave (sonic boom) traveling at the speed of sound (340 m/s) would take about 30 seconds to reach the ground, smashing all the windows and setting off car alarms as it did.

This was a really cool event. Too bad so many people were hurt from flying debris.

If you want to play with the parameters to estimate the effect, there is a good calculator here:

The estimates seem to be that the meteor was around 15m in diameter and probably 7000 metric tons. That would imply it had a density of ice. If instead we assume they rounded up the diameter and it was actually around 13 meters then the density matches porous rock.

Edit: Oops, I was assuming a metric ton was 2000 kg. It's 1000 kg. 15m diameter is exactly 7000 mt if you assume a density of 4000 kg per m^3 which implies very dense rock or dense rock and some metal.

Amazing that more people weren't hurt or killed. Thank God for the earth's atmosphere and magnetic field which protects it from erosion by cosmic and solar radiation!
