I'm curious about the general feeling toward stickering puzzles. Is it your favorite part of the hobby? Do you avoid it at all costs? I'm interested to hear your take on it, and what things you do because of it.

Voting in the poll is helpful, but voting followed by explanatory replies would be even more awesome.

(This is partly to satisfy my own curiosity, and partly for one of my grad school courses.)

I love it! Yes, I'm crazy (at least my wife says so)!

I've stickered hundreds of puzzles with either standard color schemes or sticker mods often with hand cut stickers.

I used to despise stickering. I've gotten much better and much faster at it now so I'm pretty neutral about it.

I don't mind stickering. I like assembling better though, but stickering isn't too bad :)

ENJOYING it.. hmm.. ONLY when I have ordered a special set. Not when there is a default set that I can "slap on".

I don't mind stickering puzzles, but when I have to hand cut the stickers myself, I loathe it (it often delays some of my new puzzles from being finished). Probably my favorite part of making puzzles is assembling.

Soothing indeed. The repetition is calming, and I can often spend hours listening to music and stickering. Oddly enough, I only prefer stickering the larger puzzles (Petaminx, tuttminx) because anything else is over too quickly or the stickers are too large...

It seems like I disagree with the majority of you. I dislike stickering- I feel that it stresses me out. I have had many a bad sticker job, so I am always worried about messing up.

I like stickering, ´love´ would be too much.
It has something ruminant. (I hope my dictionary translated "meditativ" in German correctly. )
Only a few puzzles were real stress, e.g. the stickering of the Megaminx corner stickers inside the Multi Dodecahedron or the glueing of the Mico pentultimate stickers.

I hate stickering because I love my stickers perfectly center and that is why I still have unstickered puzzles at the moment.

I must admit sometimes stickering can be quite relaxing. And there is nothing worse that receiving a new puzzle to find the stickering is poor, so I would rather do it myself. As long as the puzzle was cheaper, of course!

It depends... It's true I prefer receiving an unsticketed puzzles rather then a stickered puzzle with messed stickers but to say I love stickering... I find that some puzzle are more fun to sticker then other, and some are a total pain because sometimes unstickering a puzzle can be difficult if all the glue stays... I would say that I'm neutral about it. Sometimes I am happy to sticker a puzzle, and other days I would prefer to throw the puzzle away rather then stickering it  .

I hate stickering, which is one of the main reasons I haven't produced more Qubami. While it only takes about 7 minutes to apply all 54 stickers to one puzzle, my finger tips are numb with pain after about 50 puzzles (that's 2,700 stickers!). I want more cheap Chineese labor to assemble and sticker these things. God I HATE srickering so much.

I didn't mind stickering until I had to sticker an EXAMINX. Tiny stickers are not fun; I have to agree with that.

I don't like stickering because I'm really perfectionistic sometimes, and my hands sometimes shake when I try to do it. But I'll do it if I have to, so I didn't pick "I hate it". :)

Incidentally, when I ordered my Master Kilominx and FT Starminx from Calvin Fan, both on separate occasions, I asked if the stickers could be pre-applied (they didn't come that way) and he was happy to have them stickered at no extra charge. In fact I think the picture of the stickered Starminx on his site might be mine. :P

It's certainly one way to get a repeat customer!

I enjoy stickering. Lately I've had to take off my glasses to be able to focus on smaller stickers, and this gets fatiguing for my eyes.

What I don't enjoy one bit is stripping the excess from cut stickers if they are not cut completely through. It is very, very aggravating because it slows down the stickering process.

Stickering is fun, easy and very satisfying. It's a great relief after several days of cutting to finally put them on the puzzle. This is when your lump of plastic magically transforms into something you're proud of (usually). The only one I didn't enjoy was the 6mm cube since I still can't get them to stick well enough to do a solve.

I don't sticker much and I'm bad at it, therefore I put that I don't like stickering. I'd much rather pay someone a few bucks for the labor and have it well stickered than me doing a bad stickering job.

Although I must say, I put black stickers on my golden cube and that turned out awesome! Granted, it's not too many stickers and they are pretty big.

I have done a bit of restickering in my time.
I am in the "love it" camp. I enjoy the process (Konrad: I find it medatative!), but that goes only to the "like" stage.

Where it bumps up to the "love" gets to Tony's comments: It is the final stage of completing something of beauty.

And properly stickered, a puzzle can transform from plain to dazzling.

I like it, but there is a point when it becomes tedious, and depending on the sticker quality, frustrating.

I sadly do love stickering. It's kind of relaxing to just sit in front of the TV with a good film, puzzle, some stickers and a scalpel and start stickering away.

This is why I have been known to offer my services when it comes to assembling/stickering puzzles for friends. :D

Really? Google doesn't translate it, my dictionary knows "meditative", so I assume a typo or a joke?
Interesting enough putting German "meditativ" into my favourite dictionary (http://www.leo.org) produces the result "ruminant". I have never read this word before.

It is the type of animal that chews it's cud.. like a cow. I can see that stickering might be repetitive like that process!

Oh.. and I'd prefer to do stickering myself than possibly receive the kinds of stickering I've had on prestickered puzzles sometimes!

Cheers,
Burgo.

Well, a ruminant is an animal which chews the cud, for example a cow. But ruminant also means thoughtful, I guess from the way a cow looks when it is just standing or lying there chewing.

I would love the option to order some puzzles unstickered. Sometime I prefer a different color scheme and sometime puzzles come really bad stickered.
And it isn't that boring. I think it's quite enjoying.

Technically a ruminant is an animal that throws up its semi-digested and bacteria-fermented food into its mouth, and then chews its vomit ("cud") once more before swallowing it to complete fermentation and digestion:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruminant

Most grazing animals are ruminants and have evolved this system to extract more energy from the tough and otherwise-indigestible cellulose carbohydrate that makes up much of the fibrous tissue in grass, etc.

I doubt this is what Konrad was referring to.

I think Konrad is looking for 'ruminative' from the verb ruminate - means to think about something, similar to Dave's meditative or contemplative.

I find stickering a 'necessary evil' - I certainly don't enjoy it but I also know it is worthwhile as it can really 'make' the puzzle so I don't mind it too much.

I like stickering store bought puzzles and would prefer the option to do them myself.
Making stickers though for mods, tests the patience sometimes, only because of the time it takes to make good stencils first and then cutting them all out by hand, applying them is fine though.

I am actually terrible when it comes to stickering (especially small) pieces...

I like it only when I am finishing a prototype because I cannot wait to play with it.
but then, this has nothing to do with the actual stickering procedure!

Therefore... my answer is... nope!

I despise stickering myself. I find it annoying and tedious and always groan when a puzzle arrives that needs to be done. I'm not good at it, they never turn out well, so I'd prefer pre-stickered every time

I hate sanding and breaking in.

Give me back the good old days when an I stickered puzzle wasn't an option.

Stickering. Not me, I'm grateful for friends that are willing to do it for me in exchange for playing with the puzzles for a month or two....

Now THAT is definitely true. I have gotten cubes in lately that you would think they stickered it drunk.

Needless to say I got a coupon or discount in exchange for that, but still.. bleh.

last August at the IPP. And I can be as patient too, but on anything else but stickering!!!

I don't like stickering either. I can't find this Zen feeling some are having. This calming experience. I am just stressed by it. I need to get it done and it feels anoying. I don't know why. I usually don't have problems at sitting down and just thinking about stuff for hours, be it inteligent complex stuff like math or just something else. Also I hold a record of little over 12 hours non stop CAD. Except eating in front of computer thinking. Also I like Origami sometimes. Or drawing.

But stickering. NOO I neeeed to get it done! As am atter of fact it's making me nervous to only think about it and trying to figure weather I could find this relaxing part of it if I only give myself into it. It's just not working at all.

So I vote for. "I don't like it."

I have mentioned this several times before and once more won't hurt. To those who hate stickering, how are you doing it? If you're fumbling around using just your fingers then I understand your dislike. Once you are set up with the right equipment and seating position anyone (without a physical ailment) can do it fast and accurately. It's not about having any skill it's simply setting up right and feeling comfortable. For those who haven't seen it take a look at my tutorial- http://youtu.be/YP65ORf4KJg?t=1m50s . If you do it like this and still hate it then fine, if not give it a go.

Tony, that's a great video, thanks for sharing.

BTW, with the film, did you try transfering the stickers onto the film by peeling the sticker backing over the edge of a ruler? The bend/fold in the backing should help to ensure 100% transfer of the stickers onto the film...
