Hello Twisty Puzzlers! A quick update on Eitan's Star. Martin sent me a sample puzzle, which I think is the final design. I think the plastic is better quality than the first prototype I received sometime last April. If you recall, the corner caps on the first prototype cracked very easily. I haven't found any cracks on this puzzle yet. [Moderator: This is an update to this original topic. ]Attachment:

The puzzle arrived in a display case that I can only describe as bizarre. It looks like it is made to hold both dodecahedral and icosahedral puzzles. I don't really understand why they went to all this trouble to display the puzzle, but I'm sure they had their reasons. Attachment:

I haven't stickered it yet, but now that I have an awesome sticker cutter, it's only a matter of time. -Eitan

I'm really looking forward to this puzzle Eitan and it looks like the release is fast approaching. I'm interested to see how MF8 handles stickers for this 20-sided puzzle. It seems difficult to get 20 sufficiently distinct colours of vinyl, particularly for black puzzles. I'd rather have gold weave and polka dots than five shades of blue! Will there be a cubic version?

A side benefit of that packaging is that it holds the puzzle well protected in a square package. For puzzles with many delicate pieces this is great!

Hi MF8. I'm really looking forward to this puzzle. Will the production Eitan's Star have 10 colours or 20?

That price is a bit of a shock first thing in the morning... I was expecting a price something around the recent similar-sized rex dodec or similar.

Honestly I was expecting it to be a bit more, but I see your point; the Bauhinia is essentially an icosahedron in dodecahedral form. I think the ES has quite a few more moving parts. I also wonder if that price includes the stand? In any case, my preorder is made Looks like they will go out in the second half of February.

I didn't say anything about what I thought of the puzzle. Beautiful! Wonderful! Which is why it's disappointing that it's so much - roughly the same as a teraminx. Quote: the Bauhinia is essentially an icosahedron in dodecahedral form. I think the ES has quite a few more moving parts. I'm sure there are reasons for the price, but the disappointment is because I've been looking forward to this for so long. I just can't see how I'm going to be able to afford it at the moment. Quote: I also wonder if that price includes the stand? Well i hope you're right, and I hope the cost of the stand is around $50

I'm a little surprised by the price as well... I was expecting something more like the Bauhinia Dodecahedron.
I hope the HK Now Store will take some pictures once they get the stock in. They're currently using my photos from throughout this process.

Eitan
Were you ever told even roughly what they were selling it for? I don't know if I'm allowed to ask this, but are they compensating you financially in any way for making them a puzzle to sell?

Quote: Obviously the price isn't ideal Yes, well, I think the issue is that this non-ideal price is ultimately going to hurt Eitan because there'll probably be quite a few people who just can't afford it.

Yeah that price is definitely out of my range too. I'd love to have it otherwise though, maybe they could sell a much cheaper DIY kit?

Eitan,
Congratulations! It has been a long time since I have been floating around the forum. I do have a question for MF8 though. You or another member may be able to give me an answer. Will this puzzle be available with the other recent MF8 puzzles together in a series set? I would rather buy the a complete set of the newly released cubes for a discounted price?
Possible?

I haven't purchased a puzzle in a long time. I have been waiting for this puzzle. I told myself even if I quit puzzles altogether I would still buy this puzzle. $100 is a lot more than I wanted to pay, but I will buy this puzzle. I will wait to see if they come out with a limited edition color. I'm hoping maybe a red this time.

Regarding price... I want MF8 to do whatever it takes to bring us as many mass produced puzzles as possible. They've brought out enough products in the last few years that I think they know what price to change to recover their costs and reinvest in their business.
$100 sucks but I'll pay it if it means MF8 makes enough to encourage them to bring us more puzzles.

With that kind of price, I would be more inclined to scrounge up a little extra and get the Radio Cube 3. Actually that's probably what I'll do lol but congrats Eitan!

The price shocked me too this morning ! I was waiting this puzzle for so long : icosahedral puzzle are so rare. I will buy ot for sure, but I don't know when... And sure, the difference of price with a radio 3 or a master curvy is not so huge. My shapeways purchases should be also postpone to an undertermined day...

I've got a quick question about the Eitan's Star. Please excuse my lonstanding absence as I've kind of shifted away from puzzle collecting for a while (I've not discontinued my hobby persay, but severely cut back my collecting due to space and money constraints, and also to focus on other hobbies such as classic video games). Is this the first 20-axis puzzle to be mass produced? (by "axis" I mean functional rotation axes, which in some modern designs is independent of the number of screws used to hold a puzzle together). I know that mf8 was working on a "rex dodecahedron" which contained curvy-cut rotating corners. Has this ever been produced, or was production scrapped in favor of Eitan's Star? From what Rox (katsmom) told me, she had handled a prototype of the Rex Dodecahedron puzzle, and it was not very stable. EDIT: Nevermind, answered my own question:Bauhinia Dodecahedronhttp://www.hknowstore.com/locale/en-US/ ... 0a2139d2cdNeedless to say, I'm somewhat on the fence about getting this one. I have very much wanted a face-turning Icosahedral puzzle for a long time. This would complete my desire to have the entire set of platonic solids. Cube, Tetrahedron (Pyraminx), Dodecahedron (Megaminx), Octahedron (FTO and Skewb Diamond) have existed for quite some time now. If I do get one, I'm somewhat considering doing a ten-color variation, even if it results in parity issues, due to the fact that 20 colors is harder to differentiate. A five color version would also work, but corner differentiation would be a nightmare with 12 unique corners with different arrangements of the same five colors. Also, the million dollar question: Does it jumble?

I've always suspected that this would be an expensive puzzle, but $99 is a lot. But is is beautiful ... I think that I will wait until people have had this in their hands, I wouldn;t want to pay that much for a paperweight. stardust4ever wrote: Also, the million dollar question: Does it jumble? Wow, superfast responses! Thanks peeps...
I went ahead and placed orders for both icosahedral-based puzzles at the hknowstore. Finally, I'll be able to complete my collection of platonic puzzles.

The difference in solving challenge between 10-colours and 20-colour is significant, so I very much hope they ship with 20 or that 20-colour sets are available very quickly.

I’m waiting to order until they are ready to ship and we find out more about the number of colors. They may do multiple versions (10 color and 20 color) and I want to make sure I purchase the correct one.
