Ooh fantastic, this has to be the answer. The sun's name is Sol though.
Yes, Sol was the name I was after. His system is the Solar System. And the result that this system has produced that non other is known to have produced is life.

The sun is an average, middle aged star. And my last clue I got from here.

The first populated land where the Sun will rise on a new day is the Chatham Islands.

I thought this was funny. Of the last two words in that phrase, it was the second to the last that was to be taken literally. You were just one word off.

Thanks for playing,
Carl

No, I was just teasing Gus that the sun should begin with a small s, otherwise it's the title of a newspaper.

Because Earth, Mars and Jupiter are proper names, like Sol and Luna, but unlike the sun and moon.

Not according to Oxford English Dictionary (and yes, I checked).

Anyway, it's your turn for the next riddle...

Anyway, here is my effort. When I get big I am hard, but I can also be hard when I am small and soft. What am I?

I like your thinking. But no.

HINT: It's one thing which can change size i.e. get bigger and smaller.

No.

HINT: But it is natural like rubber. And when I say hard it is really hard. And really really soft

Correct :D When water freezes it expands and gets "big" and hard. When it is liquid, it is really soft unless you hit it at speed when it is like hitting concrete. Your turn.

Good thinking, but no: the thing that gets bigger is the same thing that gets smaller, and vice versa.

So I can rephrase my question: What gets bigger and smaller at the same time?

Nope. There is no play on words here, so bigger means bigger, and smaller means smaller, in terms of physical scale.

That doesn't fit with what I said about the same thing getting bigger and smaller (in terms of physical scale) at the same time: a heap of money doesn't get bigger and smaller at the same time.

Nice idea, but not right: I understand the value gets bigger as the absolute number gets smaller, and vice versa, but the value and absolute number are not the same thing; so the value (or absolute number) gets either bigger or smaller, but not both at the same time.

Nope, but I like your thinking. This could even be a better answer (more like a proper riddle).

However my answer is not a play on words, but something where bigger and smaller forms are truly identical to each other, and yet distinguishable from the original size.
