I have almost run my current laptop into the ground and now thinking about another. My maximum price if £1000. I do a lot of video editing and often go off doing other stuff like website editing while I am waiting for videos to render (if that's the correct term). I never really game or watch films but understand the specs needed are similar. So, what do you computer experts think of this- http://www.laptopmania.co.uk/proddetail ... 5UK_Laptop ?

Hey Tony, I can't really comment on price because I don't really pay attention to that for laptops.

I have two comments though:

1) You'd do better with a desktop if you can give up portability. You'll get more CPU, more/faster disk, and more memory with a desktop (all for the same price).

2) Provided you can live with either 256 or 512 GB of disk instead of 750, you'd do much better with with a fast SSD drive. Video editing is sensitive to disk seek times and read rates and video encoding / copying is sensitive to disk write rates. An SSD is significantly faster all all of these at the cost of less total storage available.

Hey, I have an i5 with 8gb ram and 500 gb hard drive, my laptop flawlessly runs editing programs including sony vegas, adobe after effects, cinema 4d etc etc. A desktop would be better of course but that laptop you showed should workk very well

Yeah it's not a matter of will the laptop be able to perform these tasks or not. It will. It's just a matter of could a similarly priced option perform them faster? If you allow desktops the answer is yes.

It has to be a laptop because I hate just sitting at a desk and only doing computer stuff. I like to watch TV and move to other rooms when necessary.
In an ideal world I would have a key board connected to a 14 inch screen (like a pseudo laptop) connected to a big powerful pc with a handle on top and a mega battery so I can relocate around the house. If you're reading this IBM, HP, Sony etc, it's my idea and I want royalties!

You can have that via SSH, VNC, X11 forwarding, or RDP. Graphically intensive things like video editing will still need to be done on the host computer though.

It runs whatever you want it to run. Pity you have to pay Microsoft a tax even if you choose to run something else.

Heh. It so happens I manage the team that writes desktop clients (which include Windows and Linux thin clients) for accessing VMware View desktops.
Work has been done (by both Citrix and us) to virtualize and remote 3D graphics streams so while this is not yet mainstream, it is possible.
