I've been looking for a Trio puzzle unsuccessfully for a while now so when I found two puzzlers I decided to try to make my own:

I'm quite happy with the result, it's not perfect but movement is fairly good and it's enjoyable to solve.
I did have a few problems / made a few mistakes. I'll list some of them here in the hope they may help other beginners:

I dyed the puzzles first - this was a mistake as when I cut them to join them together the original colour became visible again.
While the frame dyed well the puzzle pieces did not take the dye, I'm not sure if this is to do with the plastic in them or if I didn't use a strong even concentration of acetone. Because of this I had to cut stickers the full size of the pieces which doesn't look as nice (in my opinion) as if there had been a black border around the edges.

I think the size is quite nice and good for solving as the original puzzlers were quite small:



I do have a spare half puzzle left over so I may turn it into a Quadplex at some stage!

I think I will try to do a little more work on the right hand side join as it looks pretty uneven in the pictures - surprisingly not as noticeable in real life!

This is really cool! I had no idea they weren't connected by design originally. The one thing I don't like that much is that two of the three centers are connected, if that makes sense.

Yes I know what you mean - I thought the clear acrylic cover from the second puzzle would meet the edge of the first one too, because as you can see they are just separated by the moveable pieces of the puzzle - I have no idea why it doesn't though as the pieces are the same size from puzzle to puzzle!

Can anyone explain why they won't meet? What did I do wrong, I can't figure it out!

Now that I look at it again, i'm not sure the hexagons are regular. Looking at the right pieces, the clear plastic doesn't seem to go all the way to the middle of the pieces.

I think you're right - the acrylic that's still joined from the original "puzzler" is stretched a little where the hexagons meet, the single hexagon from the other puzzler has lost that "stretch" where I cut it so that's why it doesn't meet up cleanly, plus it would only have had the stretch on one side so it would never have met up with the two hexagons cleanly anyway.

I guess I could try to cut a piece of acrylic to cover the three holes but then I'd run into a problem with it fitting into the holes - I'm not sure it's worth the hassle!
