Hi Twisty Puzzles fans,

Geared 1x1x4 is a four-layer twisty puzzle. The four layers are held together by planetary chevron gears. The object is to rotate the layers, scramble the puzzle and then get it back to its original state. That is much harder than it looks. The gearing ratio's are 35-10-55 and 35-21-77.

I like this, but I still don't understand how the gearing ratios change.

Thanks. All my designs are available for mass production. Just find me a producer who is willing to invest time and money in this puzzle.

Are the gear ratios the same as your gear head puzzle?

this puzzle is phenominal!
This is as cool as the gear shift. And the fact that you chose helical gears (maybe so they can't slide along and disassemble the puzzle?) is the ultimate win in design. This is one hell of a bad ass engineer's puzzle. I have to have this!

Edit: actually I like this even better than Bram's Cube which I was hoping to be planned for mass production by Meffert's next. So Meffert's just take this design!!! (No offense, Bram :lol:

)

Can you upload some additional images:
One image showing the orange side in solved state.
One image for each of the possible moves, except the first one which already has an image.
If I interpret the video correct there are at least three possible moves, right?

And my usual questions:
Edge length?
Weight?

Fantastic idea, I love it.

Is it possible to achieve all 4^3 = 64 combinations, where the sides are perfectly aligned?

Just an idea: Could you make the outside cylindrical, with a single white dot (or bar) on the circumference of each disc (no colours) so that the goal is to align the 4 white dots/bars. I think this would be much cheaper to print...

How do you count the number of moves on a Rubik's Cube? Do you count only the six layer moves? Or do you also count the three slice moves? By the first logic, the Geared 1x1x4 has only two moves, viz. if you keep the central shaft immobile then you could move the top two layers or the bottom two layers. By the second logic, the Geared 1x1x4 has three moves. Another way of counting is that you can always keep any of the two-out-of-four (=6) layer pairs aligned, and the other two can turn. By that third logic, the puzzle has six types of moves.

Note that I have chosen the gearing ratio such that you cannot solve the puzzle by just repeating any of the 2, 3 or 6 types of moves described above.
