We’ve just carved a shining star for your collection! Attachment:

It takes the shape of a very peculiar polyhedron technically named dodecahedron-small triambic icosahedron compound(DSTIC). A quick search shows that there are very few pages over the internet talking about it. Attachment:

Puzzlers are advantageous in this case. Think about the Alexander's Star as the edge only megaminx, Super Star corresponds to the edge only tuttminx(EOT). Attachment:
DSCF0329.JPG [ 206.07 KiB | Viewed 11644 times ]
This sample was stickered in a way similar to Alexander's Star which presents a very different solving experience. Attachment:

In order to avoid potential catches, rotational layers are slightly concaved. Stickers are protected by sunken design of visible faces. 32 springs give it a soft movement. As usual, 43-color sticker set allows full customization of your very own Super Star. Attachment:

Sweeeet! That's a beautiful puzzle. Will it be available in black as well as white?

Wow! Topping your two Tuttminx would be challenging, but now you announce the Super Star based on a wonderfully complex polyhedron. Congratulations on this beautiful and interesting and BIG puzzle! otischeng wrote: What a great design! Handling will be a minor problem I think I'm prepared to wear a Kevlar "solving glove"

Nice I like stellated polyhedra but I'm not a fan of the Alexander's Star sticker scheme. There must be some other creative ways to sticker this puzzle... Anyone have any ideas? I'd like it to be "obvious" that the puzzle is solved while still not having a huge number of duplicate edges.

Thank you guys for attention. Video has been added to the original post. You can also reach it here: http://youtu.be/XuLcn1b5E0M. @Gus: Yes it will be available in black and white. @otischeng, @Pete the Geek: The geometry requires that it contain sharp corner and cautions should be taken when playing. Rotation is very easy if properly aligned. Actually the reason that we break classical tuttminx as well as Super Star into much more pieces than necessary is to thoroughly address every round corner that is necessary for better movements. You may break in and check every detail of the design. @bmenrigh: The Alexander's Star scheme adds difficulty when observing, hence solving. Anyway you can sticker it the way you like, it is a part of the puzzle. Cautions should be taken, however, that there are only 43 colors and each color contains 6 sides of hex-hex edge and 6 sides of pent-hex edges only as you can see in the sticker file. @Burgo: this scheme is pretty focused and easy to observe. Thank you!

Nice!!! May I ask if this is fudged? Can the points with 6 edges be turned by 60 degrees or do they need to be turned by 120 degrees? I can't pull up YouTube at work so forgive me if this question is answered in the video.

No, Super Star doesn't fudge. Actually the data sheet has explained this in the "Symmetry" section: hexagonal faces has 3 fold symmetry. Turing 60 degree of the hexagonal faces will block movements of all neighbored layers just like the classical tuttminx. wwwmwww wrote: Nice!!! May I ask if this is fudged? Holy smokes! Great addition to your line of puzzles! I can't to own one and sticker it in Burgo's color scheme. I also stickered my alexanders star in 20 colors.

I also stickered my alexander star with the 20 color sceme. I dont think it is possible to sticker it like burgo because that requires 60 different colors if no repeats are made.

Here all the pentagonal faces are the same colour. Each "star" face has the colour of the adjacent pentagonal face. Not satisfactory yet. Really what I would like is all the "star" arms the same colour but somehow unique. Some kind of checkering? I welcome your ideas to try out. Attachment:

If you are particularly worried about duplicate colours, there is this possibility: The only drawback is that it takes the orientation out of the orientatable edges, but I don't really think that takes too much out of the solve, it would be a compromise.

Hi Pete, I like how your sticker pattern reveals the underlying dodecahedron, I made a few more patterns based on that idea: (interesting how with these you are solving 2 puzzles)

@ Burgo + Pete the Geek: Very good ideas for stickering. I will buy more than one Super Star.
The solving of the Super Star is more difficult then the Tuttminx. Especially the overview of the pattern.

@ Burgo, your colouring idea makes all the edges and star points unique and it is a nice pattern. Here is a small sample of a scheme where the stars points are all the same colour (they could also be the same colour as the pentagon face) but there is a sticker on each tip that tells us what it's neighbour should be (so each piece is unique). I only did 3 as my software makes this tedious. Clearly, they would have to be bigger. I think that triangular stickers would be easy to cut and place. Attachment:

The colouring in the previous posting is very good, the stars are more clearly visible than in the other colour schemes.

seeing that photo made me order mine. I couldnt resist it looking at it next to the tuttminxes edit: is it me or are the piece not straight? it seems slightly curved to me.

There is a slight curve to the pieces.
One thing that I really appreciate about this puzzle is that the area to place the stickers is slightly recessed so that they won't catch as easily as they do on an Alexander's Star.

Hey, thanks for posting this Gus, it's nice to see what it looks like on the actual puzzle. I didn't get one in the end, but now I want one! Speaking of this, it would be cool to have a matching Alexander's Star with the same pattern.
