A few people have reported an inability to upload images. This is solved for the moment, but a more permanent solution is urgently needed. I intend to get started on that ASAP and resolve it by this coming weekend.

I've got the new hosting account mostly set up and am currently running tests to ensure we can have a relatively painless switch from the current host to the new one. I hope to perform this switch on Sunday morning, which will require some forum downtime, starting with me disabling the "old" forum, switching the DNS servers with my domain registrar, taking a final backup of the Twisty database, asking the new host to restore the backup, running some tests, enabling the "new" forum.

Watch this thread for updates.

The server switch is going forward today. I will begin the process by disabling the addition of new content at 9am EDT (in about 30 minutes from now).

I expect the entire process to take me about 5 hours, although most of that is waiting for the new host to restore a copy of the current database. With that said, DNS server updates can also take some time, meaning your ISP may continue to direct you to the old version of the site for up to two days after I've requested the switch. There is nothing I know of that we can do to speed that part of the process up, so hope for the best in that regard.

When the switch is complete, you will see a new message in this thread.

Wish me luck, everyone!

Sandy

Let me know (this thread, PM or e-mail) if you see anything amiss.

There seem to be a few lingering problems. Both http://www.twistypuzzles.com and twistypuzzles.com are not behaving the same way (they previously did), and the Shop has some configuration issue which I don't think I can resolve until the first issue goes away.

I've tried everything I can think of 10x here, and I'm starting to think that the www thing is a DNS issue.

EDIT: Oh, and a bunch of forum file attachments have not been uploaded to the new server yet. The exaplanation for this eludes me entirely, as I left it uploading overnight a few days ago, yet only 25% of them seem to have been transferred. I'll be uploading them in reverse chronological order throughout the day. We're talking about more than 40000 files weighing in at over 9 gigs, so it'll take a while.

Hi Sandy

congratulations on your success changing the host.

An issue: I can't see uploaded images prior to the change. For instance, the images in the first post of this thread. viewtopic.php?f=15&t=23559

Is it just me? Was you aware of that?

Thanks!

This looks like a very smooth transfer to the new server :D
Thank you Sandy!

EDIT: As it has turned out, it was a much bigger problem than originally perceived.
A few days later everything seems to be fixed.
Thanks for all your work, Sandy.

File upload status update: About 10k (3gigs) have been uploaded at this point. I'll leave it running through the night, and we'll see where it's at in the morning. As I said before, they are being uploaded in reverse chronological order, so the past few years of files should all be back online now.

DNS update: the two issues mentioned above (the http://www.twistypuzzles.com / twistypuzzles.com issue, and the Shop issue) have both been resolved. The first one was just a DNS propagation issue, which resolved itself once the two domain names were in sync with my ISP and the ISP of the host server. The Shop issue was my mistake, which was being compounded by the confusions caused by the DNS issues. When I thought I was connecting to and changing the website on the new server, sometimes DNS snafus would connect me to the old server. HA!

So at this point, other than the slow uploading of the remaining forum attachments, everything seems to be complete and working. Let me know if you find out otherwise.

Judging from traffic levels, it's clear the DNS servers haven't propogated completely yet. But according to the interneters, this can take up to two days.

File upload update: They were all there all along. The new host's FTP server limits output to the first 10000 files. There are over 40000 in the directory, but I just can't see them. This limit shouldn't apply to phpBB trying to get files from the folder.

However, some attachments are still not showing up. I'm not sure what's going on yet. Most threads I look at seem to be working fine. I know the "Jumball by David Pitcher" thread is affected. Are there others? Please post them here if you find any.

Has anyone else noticed that excerpts from the Korean thread on how to solve the crazy 3x3 puzzles seems to be appearing in unexpected places? One even has appeared in this thread and has appeared in moqee's thread on puzzles with no algorithms.

I tried to edit my post but can't find a way to delete the addition!!

Maybe it is just me going mad and starting to see puzzle solutions everywhere!

In fact I have just spotted the cause - the first smiley in the list on the right of the composition page has been replaced with the wrong image!!!

Ouch! Obviously this problem is much larger than I realized. If this bug is affecting active topics, feel free to delete the attachments from your posts and re-upload them. As for finding a real solution to the problem, I'm booked solid this evening, but am available tomorrow evening.

I presume you mean the list on the left. They seem to appear correctly for me. Here's the first one: :D

Is anyone else having this issue? I wonder if it's a browser cache issue. Have you tried clearing your browser cache?

I just did this for my Jumball post, and the images show now, but there are also blank boxes where the old images were.

EDIT: Never mind, I was being an idiot  . Everything is fixed now in my post.

I believe I've found the problem.

Ever since phpBB 3.0 (which we upgraded to in Feb 2008), forum attachments have been stored in binary format without file name extensions. The new FTP program I've been trying out (since I got my blazingly fast new computer a few weeks ago) figures file names with no extension are ASCII files.

So, I'm re-uploading about 8.5 gigs of files for the third time, but this time in binary format. The upload is going to take most of the day, and probably part of the night too. I've sorted the uploads reverse chonologically again, so the most recent posts will be fixed (or so the theory goes) the soonest.

So I'm sitting here at work, checking up on how the upload is going by clicking some of the links provided above. I was surprised to find there was no improvement to the attachments on some very recent threads, all of which I am certain have been re-uploaded by now.

That's when it hit me. I'm re-uploading the files from my computer. But many of the most recent files from my computer were downloaded from the old server in ASCII format using the new FTP program, and are therefore already corrupt. ACK!

Sorry everyone, but it's going to be one more massive download/upload cycle before things will be working again. And since I'm at work, I won't be able to get it started until this evening.

However, things are never so bad that there is nothing left to be grateful for. There is much to be grateful for in this case (as in most), not the least of which is the fact that the attachments are still sitting on the old server, in their original pristine condition!

The binary download has completed, and the upload has just commenced. We're talking about over 40000 files totalling over 9 gigs, so it'll be running for a good half a day or more. Again, I sorted the files reverse chronologically to update the latest threads first.

Update: 16k files (3.1 gigs) uploaded throughout the night, 27k (6.1 gigs) to go. The reverse chronological order thing doesn't seem to have worked, not sure why. Some of the files in some of the example threads are working now. Note that the thumbnail that appears in the thread is a separate file than the larger version you see when you click the thumbnail, and one of the pair may have already been uploaded while the other has yet to be.

In my case I've had to force a reload of each page (pressing CTRL+F5) to ensure cached versions of corrupted images weren't being used. The option of clearing your cache would resolve all such issues in one step.

Regarding Sisyphus, at least I've got the FTP program to roll this boulder for me. But then again one could say the new FTP program created the boulder! (Although to be more honest, my lack of experience with the program had a much larger role in the creation of this issue than the program itself.)

The upload is complete. I've checked all of the threads above, and all work perfectly. I believe this issue is licked, but if you come across any problematic threads, please post them here.

Rox (and anyone else who is still seeing missing or corrupted images/attachments): The corrupted files are probably being loaded from your browser cache, not the server. Either clear your cache entirely (instructions here), or press CTRL+F5 while viewing a page to force a fresh download of the images from the server.
