SuperZ (2x2 + Skewb)

Hi,

I present my next puzzle from the series of cubes with magnets and based
on "metal" sphere - SuperZ. This cube is interesting combination
of 2x2 and Skewb cubes.

The idea to implement this puzzle was suggested by Evgeniy Grigoriev
(aka grigr), also he created 3D-model. I found the pattern of magnets.

The cube turns very smooth and very stable. Enjoy!

Looks simple enough for someone to design a "proper" mechanism :lol:

Can you explain why the price is so high on Shapeways, considering there is no "core"?

It's cool how it looks exactly as if it were a bevel cube, but then it turns and... surprise!

I know someone else who is gonna come out with a real one. AKA one with a mechanism. You should seriously consider implementing mechanisms in there, it's much less interesting if it's mechanically worthless

I like the puzzles you make but they would be 100 times better with a mechanism !

Yes, I've had a proper mechanical implementation in the works for a while. It's currently being printed.

Adam and Jason made a Skewb+2x2x2 in December 2009, but I gather it never worked very well. It used a buildup based on a SuperX. Mine builds up through a Dino Rhombic Dodecahedron, Dino 3x3x3, Rex 3x3x3 and Master Skewb + 3x3x3 (all appropriately bandaged). Of course it's even more complex (178 parts) so there's no telling if it will work well due to the friction that's to be expected.
For what it is, your magnetic one is a very nice alternative: it turns very nicely with a little click. Congratulations.

Iaroslavski, yours looks very nice and at the end of the day may very well turn better than is possible with a mechanical implementation. Congrats!

when I find its made with magnets I really get disapointed. this is my last rant on magnet puzzles.

Wow, I was just working on an updated version of my mechanism... It never worked great because of the inherent SuperX "squishiness", and the fact that the layer thicknesses were all wrong for SLS nylon printing, but was functional for a first prototype.

Perhaps we can arrange for all 3 designs to be tested by an objective (and very lucky) puzzler to see which will be the winner...!

Eric already has that on his shapeways shop

Also, Tom, why didn't you add a heli layer ? It's pretty easy and the cool thing about it is that it shapeshifts in more way than you could imagine
