Nice work mf8! Although I would rather see the Helicopter Dodecahedron's edges a little more... less parallel. Oh! And I love the deep cut Dino Dodecahedron.

Great job MF8, I just wish that the thin "edge" pieces and the centers didn't exist, they look awkward on the puzzle.

And here is the first one I got to see: Attachment:

with a bit of jumbling: Attachment:

I feel so much relief now that that cat has been let free I think both have some merit. I like the lack of pieces on Muffet's though. It almost makes it a "simple" puzzle. Although I'm sure it isn't. I think that one has more 'shelf appeal'

Does the center puzzle jumble? It sure looks like those cuts would line up again mid-way through a turn.

I am posting this topic in "New Puzzles" on behalf of MF8. More specifically, the image uploaded to this post: http://twistypuzzles.com/forum/viewtopi ... 34#p253734 Rather than Hijack the thread, I felt it necessary to start a new discussion, since nobody has mentioned it yet: Many of you are already familiar with the announcement of Starminx I, lower right in the photo (Dino-Dodecahedron would be a more accurate description). But in the lower left is a prototype Helicopter (edge-turning) Dodecahedron, and in the upper middle, a prototype Rex Dodecahedron, which appears to be functionally equivalent to this Face-Turning Icosahedron by Bhearn: Source: http://twistypuzzles.com/forum/viewtopi ... 21#p195521I think many people would consider the FTI to be the holy grail of puzzle designs. A dodecahedral version is just as good! Let the discussion commence!

I can't wait. I hope they produce icosahedron versions of these, at least the Rex Dodecahedron. Out of all the weird and wonderful shapes puzzles are mass produced in, not one is an icosahedron. I'll be buying all of these puzzles, but the Helicopter Dodecahedron is just an epic disappointment. All of the proportions are weird, and it doesn't look very asthetically pleasing. However, the Helicopter Dodecahedron is one of my favourite puzzles, so I will be buying it.

Also please remember that Icosahedrons have 20 sides, which will inevitably create color recognition problems for some people.

I wrote: Out of all the weird and wonderful shapes that puzzles are mass produced in, not one is an icosahedron. That is true, but there isn't even a mere shape mod of a 3x3x3 released yet. I only own one icosahedron out of the 195 I own, and that was a Shapeways puzzle (thank you Greg). They could always sell ten coloured icosahedrons as well.

The Helicopter Dodecahedron may not look so bad when stickered. As for the Rex Dodecahedron, wow! Beautiful!

I really hope they don't use colored plastic (I prefer stickers, but colored is acceptable), but with those small pieces I don't think that it's very plausible. I also hope this means that there soon will be a FTI on the mass produced market, if MF8 decides to create a shapemod of the rex dodecahedron.

All Helicopter Dodecahedrons have to have the edges and centers of the dodecahedron exposed if there is no overlapping involved (like Muffet's).

I also commented that the name "Dino-Dodecahedron" would be a better description. At least that's what I meant; it is clear to me now that I made a typo, which I have now edited. Regardless, you removed the "Dino" reference from my quote. EDIT:GuiltyBystander wrote: It was just that 1 store that misnamed it I think. Okay, I have reread your post and everything makes sense now. I assume HKnowstore is the merchant you referenced. On the other hand, I think a true Starminx I (as in a deeper cut Megaminx/Pyraminx Crystal) would be extremely difficult and/or espensive to mass-produce given that it would require a large onion-like multilayer mechanism to build.

- It's not a Starminx I
- You never said "Dino-Dodecahedron"
- Excalvin isn't mf8
- Excalvin and mf8 aren't Aleh who created the first real Starminx and named it.
- Excalvin and mf8 aren't Drewseph who created the subsequent Starminx II and Starminx III which caused the rename of "Starminx" to "Starminx I"
- It's still not a Starminx I
No matter how you look at it. It isn't a Starminx I.

No matter how you look at it. It isn't a Starminx I. It's a Starminx 4! StarMinx Zero because it's easier to solve and shallower cut than the others! Neat little trick this baby can do that the Dino Cube can't is flip edges @GuiltyByStander: I never meant to start an argument

I think that he meant that it is deeper cut than a normal dino dodecahedron. If it were deep cut, it would be a chopasaurus.

I call deeper cut puzzles deep cut. I call puzzles like the Pentultimate, Big Chop, and the Chopasaurus an origin cut puzzle.

Wasn't Kuhrik the first person to make one of these puzzles? Then he has the right to name it what he wants! I might be wrong, but I think he called it a "Dino Dodecahedron". So the discussion on what to call it should really end here, regardless of what mf8 or xcalvin would like to call it. For the same reason I like to call a certain puzzle "Brilic" and another one "Bump Cube".

By that logic, Meffert's should be currently selling the Trignis and Fadi Cube, but they're nowhere to be found on the site. What's a Vulcano, again? Something that spits lava!

I plan on buying all three of them together when they are all available. The Helicopter Dodecahedron and the 20 axis deeper cut (Rex) dodecahedron are especially intriguing! and to avoid another debate, by "axis," I mean virtual, not physical...

These 3 new puzzles only have prototype now. They will not be released into the market in 2 months. The one on the right side is another version of starminx with deeper cutting, may be called starmin II. Thanks for your suggestion on the naming. We shall consider them in detail. ^^

I just might have to buy one of those. You should sell them all in a box set for slightly reduced price.

Yay! I'll be buying all four of these. The Helicopter Dodecahedron does look better with the stickers on now (although I still believe they could have chosen more asthetically pleasing cuts).

The Helicopter Dodecahedron does look better with the stickers on now (although I still believe they could have chosen more asthetically pleasing cuts). Do you expect that this Starminx is different from the "vertex turning Dodecahedron" they are selling, already? (a real Starminx V1?)

Urggg. I've had my eyes on the deeper cut corner-turning dodecahedron for some time now. It's functionally identical to an FTI. I'm also drooling over the helicopter Dodecahedron as well. Recently, I finally broke down and ordered the Dino dodecahedron in blue ice; hasn't arrived yet. Should look really nice next to my orange ice mega- and giga- minxes.
I just wish mf8 will stop teasing us and place them up for sale already. I'm well aware that it takes time, but I really, really, really want them very badly...

I don't suppose that this one is corner turning. If it was it would have cuts that wo through the edges of the puzzle, like Drew's Starminx III: http://www.twistypuzzles.com/forum/view ... 15&t=18431The one in the bottom left corner of MF8's last picture doesn't have those. I suppose it's face turning. If you are talking about the curvy cut vertex turning dodecahedron you are right though. That should indeed funcion like the FTI posted by stardust4ever further above.

I see the helicopter dodecahedron on your website, Calvin, however, when I click it and see the other photos, they are showing the Rex dodecahedron. Which puzzle is it actually selling?

Looking forward to it, but please tell me you aren't calling that puzzle the helicopter dodecahedron. This is the helicopter dodecahedron. It gets it's name from the helicopter cube which is an edge turning puzzle. Attachment:

I'm getting this first thing when it is released and I haven't been so excited about a new puzzle in a long time; thank you MF8 for producing this puzzle and thank you xcalvin for updating us on when the sale will start.
