Behold my latest puzzle, my medium version of Fisher's Golden Cube: [edit] Changed title to medium Golden Cube because I forgot about Tony Fisher's mini which was only 45mm. [/edit] This version is only 57mm on a side compared to the Mefferts production version which was 80mm: It was designed in Google Sketchup and printed by Shapeways in WSF. The Pieces were sanded, dyed and then sprayed gloss black: I used a Meffert's mini skewb keychain ball as a core, which I bought from Sandy at his last auction and then promptly broke apart I cut my own stickers from a set of standard size Golden Cube stickers I bought from a website. The finished cube turns very well and I am very happy with the end result

Phenomenal! I love this puzzle. Would you ever consider designing a V2 which would have the Skewb core included in the design and sold on Shapeways, if Tony allowed it. (I'm sure if you gave him royalties and he allowed it, this could do amazing on Shapeways).

I want it! beautiful rendition of a master piece. When I saw the size I thought it might have been hand modified from a normal sized skewb, still very cool.

But now I am thinking about it ...

Good job on designing those pieces. Does this version have the symmetrical "even" face triangle, that when orientated differently doesn't look different at all, or will it be a bit off, like the mass produced version? Basically my question is how did you make the 3D model? Did you measure the golden cube or start of by making this triangle on a face and such?

When I started the design I did not have a Golden cube to measure. So, I bought a set of stickers for the mass produced version, scanned each face in, and used these images in my SketchUp model for each face of the cube. I could then place the plane cuts of the skewb correctly after "turning" the halves of the cube so that the core would be in alignment. Thus, I ended up with those two triangles slightly different, not like Tony's original.

Just a quick update. I've asked Tony about selling this, and he has quite reasonably objected, saying that any Golden Cube copies produced would devalue his own originals. So sorry guys

Is there any way you could send me the 3d model file that you sent to shapeways...I have been trying to get the golden cube for months now with no luck? I would really appreciate the chances to make one myself. Thanks! Benjamin

Sorry if I’m wrong. Just trying to help.

I can't see the difference between sending you the 3D files and you getting them made, and you buying them via my shapeways shop. Unless you can convince Tony otherwise ... And remember, you will also need a Mefferts min keychain puzzle ball to use as the core which is just as rare as the Golden Cube Some day I will design the keychain core as well ...
