Hi Twisty Puzzles fans,

Geared 5x5x5 is a higher-order variation to the Gear Cube. A set of gears make an inner layer turn at half the speed of an outer layer. This way, the outer layers can only be turned by 180 degrees. The gearing ration is 4:40, so the puzzle always retains it cubic shape, and the edge gears can only be flipped by 180 degrees. Still, the puzzle is fiendishly difficult.

Enjoy!

Great, just when I thought the laws of physics were reaching harmony, Oskar has to go and screw up the universe again.

Seriously, great job! :D

Did you think about applying gears to dodecahedral and other non-cubic puzzles? OK, silly question, I don't doubt that you've already got every possible puzzle idea ever, designed and waiting in your 3D printer queue.

Interesting way to step up the gear cube. It'd be fun to play with just as a 3x3x3 {R2,L2,F2,B2,U2,D2} cube too ignoring the little stickers.

Yes he has. I thought I saw an FTO once too, but I don't see it now. It's probably just a shape mod of the geared skewb.

When I saw the title of the thread I'm like, "you're kidding me right?"

That's totally insane  I love it, are you going to mass-produce this one?

Isn't a Skewb a cubic puzzle?

This puzzle is really scary to look at. I'm not sure how hard it is to solve, but it certainly looks like it'd be painful if you got your fingers caught in the gears.

Amazing as always, Oskar. My mouth dropped when I saw this puzzle.

Also, I happened to pause the picture at this moment and just had to share it with you guys. (Oskar, PM me if you want it taken down).

I think it looks really cool, but I do have a few questions. How sturdy are the gears? They don't look delicate, just thin and I wonder how much pressure they could handle before something bad happened to this great puzzle. Also, what was the thought behind making the even layers so much smaller than the odd layers? Does it have to do with structural integrity, ease of use, or was is simply an aesthetic choice? Thanks.

Quite sturdy. They are made of 3D-printed nylon. Virtually unbreakable.

If I would have made the even layers any bigger then the corners would fall off. Keeping the corners connected is a well-known challenge for higher-order cubes.

Are we going to see a Geared Mixup 5x5x5 soon?
