Hey Twisty Puzzlers!

I'd like to present my newest puzzle.

Edge-Turning Octahedron

VIDEO!

Buy at Eitan's Puzzle Shop

Image

This puzzle has been designed by multiple people, but I don't think that anyone has actually made one until now. Interestingly, it is absolutely identical to the FTRD. It has all the same types of pieces, in the same places, with the same geometry. The only difference is that the FTRD centers are not on the surface of this puzzle.

I would like to announce that the Edge-Turning Octahedron is now up for sale on Shapeways!

To order a the full puzzle, you must order Part 1, 2 and 3. The total price is $99.99.

The puzzle uses twelve M2 screws with length 12mm. You can order stickers from Dr. Sticker by emailing him at drsticker (at) gmail (dot) com. Tell him that you want stickers for Eitan's Edge-Turning Octahedron, and what colors you want (color list: http://www.dr-sticker.com/colors/).

If you do not want to dye the puzzle yourself, you can order in Black Strong & Flexible for a total of $119.57 by selecting that material from the materials list.

For now, I will not be offering assembled, dyed, and stickered copies of this puzzle as I simply do not have the time.

Very nice! I remember seeing a picture of a white unstickered one a while back, I think it was from David Calzone, but I'm not 100% sure.

This is also the octahedral equivalent of a Curvycopter-2, without curvy cuts, correct?

Very good. I believe you are the first man who made this puzzle actually.

Can you show a picture of FTRD with this puzzle?

Awesome to finally see one.

Is there any special reason this shape is more difficult? It seems that if you had shallower cuts, the pieces can't hang on. Is that why?

Very nice indeed. Is there any chance you'll be releasing this on Shapeways? I'd love to buy one but I doubt I could bid for this puzzle.

Change of plans. I'm going to sell this on Shapeways as a DIY kit for $100.

If you are certain that you would buy one of these at that price, please PM me so I can get an idea of the demand for this puzzle.

Thanks!

Here's the VIDEO!

I said in the video description that it will go on sale before the end of December. If I can, I will try to get it up before the deadline for ordering for Christmas.

In the video you say that this is the first edge turning octahedron so it completes the series. That's not true, there have been a few Little Chop/24 Octahedra. I think they all have been magnet/sphere mechs though.

Your's would be the first order 2/3 (depending how you count) edge turning octahedron to my knowledge.

It's still impressive regardless of if you count it as a first or not.

Yay! But also not yay. I really sucks for me, as my parents are strongly against me dying puzzles, as last time I almost destroyed the whole kitchen, and I live in England, so there's a load of VAT on top. For me the puzzle comes out at $140. I'm definately gonna have to think about this now. :(

Can you please compare it to a normal face/vertex turning octahedron? And please say the edge length as well.

Thanks,

Just a reminder: If you want this puzzle to arrive before Christmas, you should order them before Sunday, as that is the deadline for Shapeways to be able to guarantee orders to arrive by Christmas.

Since I don't have a normal vertex or face turning octahedron, here is a size comparison with a 3x3. The edge length of the ETO is 70mm.

Someone remind me - do white pieces from Shapeways not turn out well? I'm considering ordering this, and I've never ordered from Shapeways before.

White pieces from shapeways turn out great, but they absorb oil from your hands over time. This makes them slowly turn off-white or even yellow, after a while. That's why most people on the forum dye their puzzles black, as it makes the oils not show up.

If you want a black puzzle, but you don't want to do the dying yourself, you can order the parts in Black Strong and Flexible, instead of White Strong and Flexible. It is only $20 more. (Don't worry. I don't add any extra markup to the black material. That's just the price difference for the material.)

Thanks for your interest!

Thanks for the info. What I'll probably wind up doing is ordering each of the three parts separately, as I really can't afford a $100+ order all at once, and what I mean by that is that my wife would flip if I placed an order that big just now...

That looks really smooth! Also great fun and a good challenge to solve.

I believe that Incredible's 24-Octahedra have been shell mechs.

If you do order an ETO, I would appreciate it if you sent me a PM letting me know. You don't have to, but it's nice for me to know who has copies of my puzzles.

Thanks! I'll be unveiling another new puzzle sometime before the end of this weekend.
