I have taken cheap puzzle modding to the extreme and successfully constructed a working $3 3x4x5 cubie chaos. I also have plans to build a 3x4x7, a 3x4x9, and maybe even a 3x4x11 if I have the patience.

Enough with the talking, here's some pics:

And of course a glance at the innards.

Well, What do ya' think?

OOhhhhh, I learned my lesson on that with the first siamese dollar store cube I built. One cube had been lubed in about 3 or 4 sections, and the other only 1. safe to say, I don't use it. Just trying fingertricks on the weak cube make like ten pieces pop. I don't lube dollar store cubes I mod anymore, although one sparingly spray wouldn't hurt. I did lube a normal one in one spot, and it doesn't really pop. A teeny tiny bit of silicone does make a better cube than one without.

Have you ever taken one apart? They're quite hollow, and the pieces have a bunch of the sides not filled in (probably to keep costs down), whereas a normal Rubik's cube takes up all the space around the core and all the pieces' internals are covered (although I can't say the same about the latter for the Rubik's key chain cube). Also, they actually have no springs; just two sides with screws. The rest are just tabs that squeeze together to fit through the centers. No center caps either. But, they're still decent with a tiny bit of lube. Buy one and you'll see what I mean.

no i mean i have like 15 of them, some fused together and others just to act as stands for regular cubes, but.... some of them respond really well to silicone and others crumble in your hands.

Well, considering Dollar tree makes a profit on these paper weights, they can't cost much more than a quarter to make, which in turn=mucho diversity in quality among the cubes. They also probably weren't designed for speedcubing.

upon further investigation i discovered that i have 2 different types of dollar store cube, they had different sticker patterns (the sparkly kind you get from the dollar store) and the solid colors you get at michaels or a swapmeet ( thats where i got mine but i have seen them at michaels too) they are actually different, i assumed they were the same, which is foolish. the dollar store ones, like you said, have the cheap cores and the cuts of the cube are really close to the surface, in a very very very very basic comparison, id say its cut somewhat similar to the a5 (simply how the edge pieces are cut). the other ones are more like a c or standard rubik's brand. and they turn much better and their plastic is thicker... they have real cores and respond to silicone much better. and is larger than the dollar store cubes by about 1mm. they both only cost a dollar though, so id say, next time make one from michaels cubes if you want to keep it cheap.

The dollar tree is the only place I know locally that sells these kinds of cubes, so I'm probably stuck.

I have noticed the corner cutting on these cubes is exceptional when you put some silicone in. If that's what the A V is like out of the box, I want one even more!

i wanted to avoid any reference to an actual speed cube because the dollar store cube will never compare to a real speedcube (in my opinion, i know people have made videos about speedsolving dollar store cubes, but thats about method, not cube quality). if you got an A5, it would destroy your dollar store cubes reputation beyond your wildest dreams.

I have a rubik's brand 3x3 that's been broken in, sanded down, and lubed, and it turns great. corner cutting tolerance is about 1/2 a cubie, but it'll cut an entire edge if you force it. It moves smoothly, and doesn't over-turn. Would you say the A V would crush it in terms of quality, or are they on par?

i have extensively modified my own rubik's brand cubes, before i was aware of real speed cubes, and i can say, compared to all the work i did, the AV is at least 3 times better out of the box, unlubed. maybe im not the best cube modder, but the AV is really awesome. but i have been posting about the AV all day, im sure there are plenty of other cubes that people think are bettter.

That came out very clean. Not bad at all, it seems like it turns quite well.

Yeah. The first couple solves a piece or two came unglued, but now it stays together. My only regret is two yellow stickers are a little close together.

I will NEVER EVER lube it!
