Hi Twisty Puzzles fans,

Following a suggestion by George Miller, I had my head 3D scanned a while ago and I turned it into a simple shape-mod puzzle. Eight sections of my head are glued around a Eastsheen Mini 2x2x2, bought at the Twisty Puzzles Shop.

Designing this puzzle was rather cumbersome. The 3D scan had many imperfections, including non-manifold areas and big gaps. It took several days to fill and clean the STL. As I could not find any free-and-easy-to-use STL boolean software, I did the cutting and hollowing of the STL manually, almost triangle by triangle. Ordering and gluing it onto the 2x2x2 was the easy part.

One big fan of mine bought a sample. I am not sure who else would want to buy this. I had several requests for people wanted their own head as a puzzle, but not mine. I believe that the technology is almost at the point that this would be commercially feasible, so I hope someone picks up George Miller's idea as a business.

Is it just me, or does the scan looks really really like Agent Smith?
Btw, the special effect team that made the scene of super punch on Smith's face developed a scanning system specifically for human heads that had a definition of several hundred microns (maybe even finer). And that was 2003! I believe not much human correction will be needed if the scan is done better. So there's definitely a market to be explored!

It really does look like you. You should scan a photo of your face and texture map it to the object, and print it in full color sandstone. That would really be awesome!

LOL, I always thought puzzle heads were funny. Homer Simpson is my favorite. With I had a Bart though.

What do you use for 3D scan? How did you do that?

My company TNO has a 3D scanner for scanning persons. Not for public use, unfortunately.

I guessed it would be done sooner or later. I have been looking into this for a Skewb or 3x3x3 for several years. Expense, lack of suitable places to get it done and a few other things made me give up though.
I can't find links but on a recent Gadget Show (UK TV show) they made little robots with scanned heads of the presenters. The quality looked absolutely amazing.

I had this very same idea about a year ago - Nice to see it realized!

It should be fairly easy to take a couple of photographs and do this in a program like rhino or some other 3d program, export it to solidworks, and go from there... At least that was my thought, but I've never had time to realize it...

It would be cool to see a caricature face done this way too.
