Shapeways.com!

1st place: $50 printing voucher from Shapeways.com!
2nd and 3rd place: Better luck next competition!

Please read this to its entirety if you plan on entering or posting anything.

This contest was discussed here in great detail.

The main goal of this competition is to provide unique, high quality puzzles at a very reasonable price.

Everyone will be able to vote after the two months are over on which puzzle is the best.

The rules and regulations are as followed:

1. The puzzle must be designed in cad and printed at Shapeways .

2. The puzzle itself must cost $50 usd or less to be printed.

3. The puzzle must be open to the general public with a maximum mark-up cost of $10.

4. No piece that is to be externally moved (twisted, slid, etc.) that is stickered or colored for sliding puzzles can be smaller than 1cm in any direction. This means that no layers are absurdly thin.

5. Each face of the puzzle (for 3d puzzles) must have a minimum surface area of 300mm^2.

6. You have 30 days after this is posted (until Aug 14 @ 10pm Twisty Puzzles Time) to have your design up on Shapeways or Ponoko with all revisions done and ready to be printed.

7. Your puzzle has to be an original design (your work/collaboration with all members cited).

8. You are allowed a base puzzle/object/core+screws/etc. to build off of (i.e. 2x2x4 using a mini 2x2x2 as a core) but the base puzzle/object/core+screws/etc. can't cost more than $15 usd

9. Your puzzle has to be a 3d twisty puzzle or a flat, turning puzzle such as Pascal's Jumble by Eitan (pirsquared).

10. You may enter up to two puzzles.

Below is the process on how to enter and participate in the competition:

1. Create a post below with your name and saying that you are entering the contest. This post will be edited later on as your design progresses. Every time you reach a different step, update your post (uploaded the design, arrived in the mail today, here is the video, etc.)

2. Start designing a puzzle based on the rules and regulations.

3. Once you have finished the design, upload it to Shapeways and provide a link.

4. At this point you may reveal more of your design (different views, mech, etc.) to ensure that no one can submit the same idea.

5. If somebody submits an idea you are working on, you must start over.

6. Print your design.

7. When your shipment arrives, create a video of you unboxing the puzzle, show each of the pieces, assembly the puzzle and start turning the puzzle to show how it turns without being broken in.

8. Dye, Sticker, Lube, etc.

9. Create a new video when you think the puzzle is at its height of turning ability.

10. Upload pictures, etc. to show most accurately how your puzzle turns.

You have 1 more month after the designs are due to print your puzzle and complete the second set of instructions (until Sept 13).

If you miss any deadline please contact me, or exit the competition.

If you have any questions, you may pm me or post it in this thread.

This thread is only for posts described as "process of entering" step 1.

1. Create a post below with your name and saying that you are entering the contest. This post will be edited later on as your design progresses. Every time you reach a different step, update your post (uploaded the design, arrived in the mail today, here is the video, etc.)

Please do not post anything else here.

If you would like to enter the contest, but are not a member of Twisty Puzzles, please send me a message on YouTube (my user name is Steryne) and I will enter you in the contest under my Twisty Puzzle account.

I reserve the right to edit any of the content listed above until the first deadline of uploading your puzzle file.

If you see anything that I have missed or that you think should be changed, please send me a pm or post it here.

Thanks,
Tanner Frisby
A.K.A Steryne

DONE! I will be making a Shapeways shop either before I go to Nationals, or just after I get back, and then it will be available to the public. In the meantime, here's the VIDEO.

Here's the original topic.

I'll add some more pictures later this week. I'll have this puzzle at Nationals.

I am entering the competition with my puzzle the Groove Cube.

I have pretty much finished designing the puzzle, as I came up with the idea while the rules were being discussed. For now, here's a little tidbit. If you think your puzzle may be similar to mine, please PM me.

Name: Mike Armbrust
Puzzle: 3 Layer Mech 2x2x2
Status: Uploaded
My first puzzle was too expensive! I'll still make it but not for the competition.
My second puzzle was also too expensive :(
Third puzzle wasn't great enough
Fourth puzzle was too complex.
My new puzzle is designed to show the possibilities of my 3 layer mech and also to be cheaper :D
It is 4cm by 4cm by 4cm, needs 7 bolts and springs, and will be almost impossible to lock up.

Dear Tanner,

Wouldn't it be a good idea to first ask me, before you add my name as a judge? Same for Shapeways involvement.

Thank you,

Oskar

I don't have time to post pictures of my puzzle so I will just talk (Rant) about it (So it won't be coppied).

My design is named the frustration cube. It is just like my 2/3rds cross cube (See my shop) but with 1x2x3 type extensions instead of the normal 2x2x4 extensions. This will make the puzzle killer to solve because you would have to turn the puzzle 90 degrees jut to turn the extensions.

@Pisquared and Puzzlemaster: Both your puzzles sound very interesting but I am having trouble grasping how they work. Could you please ellaborate. :D

Does anyone think that their design will be finished by nationals? I'd like to see a lot of these in person.

Can we put a markup of 10$ on a puzzle although it costs 17$, because otherwise, people will be forced to buy another puzzle with it, knowing that shapeways takes minimum 25$ orders?

Shapeways has generously offered a $50 printing voucher for the winner (since it is a $50 competition) that will expire at the end of October. :D

I am not trying to copy your design. You specified using 1x2x5 extensions and I am using 1x2x3 ones (Although this is not a valid point because it is the same general concept). Also I decided to make it shaped like a quartet instead of the normal plus shape (The Frustration quartet will make a nice brother to the crazy quartet). If you still dont want me to produce this tell me and I will think of something else. :D

Nono, don't worry, go ahead with 1x2x3 extensions, I overreacted a bit, and anyways, I have too many projects on my mind...

@Garrett, if you puzzle is cheap enough, you could make money from this

What are the rules about stands? If I design a cool stand for my puzzles to make them almost $50 like Steryne did, do they also get judged?

That's to bad, Garret.

As for stands, The general public will vote on "If I had $50, which puzzle would I buy first". If the stand is a plus, then great! If they see it as a $50 puzzle instead of a $35 puzzle, well, that isn't so great. It is your choice.

If the stand makes it cost more then it's not so great... :(

Well... I'm cancelling my entry.
I don't have the funds to do more than one copy of anything, and I would probably have to now that my first design is gone.
So... I'll work on designing things (hopefully some cool new things, eventually), but nothing for this!
Good luck everyone! :)

I am very pleased to announce my entrance into the Shapeways Summer Building Contest. My first puzzle entrance is my Mini Master Pentagonal Domino. This puzzle is now open for ordering at http://www.shapeways.com/shops/muffetpuzzle . The price for a full print as a DIY kit will be $49.97 USD.

This puzzle is nearly identical to my 2x5x5 puzzle, but with an extra side.

The $49.97 USD is actually after markup, How is this puzzle so cheap? when I said Mini I meant it. I included a picture for size reference. The cube is the size of a standard 3x3

UPDATE:

Ok so I am very tired, I did a lot of redesigning tonight, made this a little better and pillowed properly, I will reupload to shapeways tomorrow, not sure if it willchange the price yet.

new picture too

P.S. My puzzle arrived today! It looks great, but I have yet to take it out of the bag (for the video).

I'm sorry to say but I may have to drop out of this competition. This is mostly because I am short on money and I probably won't be able to scrape enough together in time. I will still put my design on shapeways so someone can sponser me if they want. I will post again later if anything changes.

after I changed the mini master pent prism so it is pillowed properly it increased the surface are of the puzzle, and therefore the price. I would not want to sell a puzzle with inferior quality so i am removing that puzzle from the competition. The new version is still however purchasable at my shop along with my new puzzle entrance for the competition. My Star Puzzle with a Twist.

My 3 Layer Mech 2x2x2 is now up on Shapeways for $40. I'm thinking of removing my fully functional siamese 2x2x2 with a locking mechanism from the competition.

Hoping to submit a very last-minute entry. PM sent to Steryne asking if the puzzle is acceptable. Design is complete and on Shapeways, but not yet public. This design is a collaboration between me and Quirky-Cubes.

Name: Jean-Marc Haché and Chandler Griscom
Puzzle: Miscellaneous Puzzle
Status: Ordered and waiting

About the name: the name is not just to hide the identity of the puzzle, I came up with the name based on an acronym. The puzzle is neither a Twisty Puzzle nor a flat/sliding puzzle, but I am hoping that it will be accepted anyways. I am the designer of the puzzle while Quirky-Cubes did the prototyping/CAD work. I am hoping to reveal the puzzle as soon as I can but it will probably be a lot closer to the deadline.

Price stands at $49.92. There was someone who was asking if anyone wanted to cut the price closer then theirs. I did :D

Well, that was a comment for PMs.

Anyways, Tanner, is there any progress on this competition? Should the voting be starting soon?

Well, we have until September 14th to present our finished puzzles, then the voting will start. However, if everyone that enters presents their puzzle before the 14th, then it will start then.

Nono I think I'll need until almost the 5th or the 10th depending on the delivery speed of the Shapeways package... I not only have a Pentultimate (not entering the competition) but also two small entries that will be in the competition (my minichopper is average, for my babyface 2x2 i'm not sure it'll be in) :)

Thanks for letting me know I still have a chance to enter the competition!! ^^
