Gear Cube sticker variation

I can't remember the last time I made a basic sticker variation and not sure where to post it but...
Oskar's Gear Cube / Caution Cube is one of my all time favourite puzzles. I was however slightly disappointed with the stickers. For that reason I hand cut my own set.
I would also like to see some sort of Escher style artwork used. I could imagine the corner stickers as fish and edges as the rising sun which is kind of ironic considering Oskar's latest creation.

Does stickering those little edge gears change the puzzle at all in terms of solving?

Agreed. I'd be willing to buy a set of stickers like these. But I'd be tempted to turn the center sticker into a super sticker.

I agree. I'm not sure if it would be suitable for tiling though, as the corners of the tile would probably flick up.

I was disappointed when I saw the original stickering covered so little. It looks really nice now.

Where'd you get the replacement Oskar and Meffert's Challenge stickers?

They're printed on clear stickers on the original. I think he just moved them, due to the size/shape the clear sticker they are on is.

In his original post he says they are hand cut.

My sticker template is a piece of plastic sheet with holes cut into it. You won't believe how long it takes to make something like that.

If someone would scan their gear cube on a flatbed scanner, I'd make the appropriate files for making stickers. PM me if you'd like, and if tony would be okay with this I have no problem making the paths for the stickers.

If gearcubes came out with this sticker design to begin with I would have bought one.
Excellent work; does the extra stickering make the puzzle much harder?

It is different, but not very much harder.

Thanks for asking but I make no claims over stickers. This is a fantastic Oskar puzzle I just happen to change a little. Some of the stickers are incredibly thin and I suspect there will be problems regarding this. People will need to be very careful when applying them and I suspect they will come off quite easily.

It would be nice to see puzzles that have very slightly recessed sections (barely deeper than the width of the sticker itself) for sticker placement. This would make them a lot more enduring and also take the guess work out of accurate sticker placement.

Here is the Tony Fisher sticker pattern for the Gear Cube, both in CDR9 and PDF format. I highly recommend stickers cut by Dragan "Dr. Sticker" Tutic. He has cut the stickers for all my twisty puzzles, offering an excellent service at a very affordable price. Just send him an email at drsticker@gmail.com with this link and ask for his quote.

For your information, I asked Uwe Meffert for the final electronic drawings of the Gear Cube and I extracted the faces. Being the inventor has its benefits. Note that I have not yet tested these stickers, as my samples have not arrived yet. Being just the inventor also has some disadvantages :wink:

Probably, I'll order a second Gear Cube, because the original stickers provide a slightly different challenge.
And the original is the original, right?

NICE!!! Can someone that gets there PLEASE offer up a review? Reading this tread it sounds like these are yet untested and I'd feel better hearing from someone that has actually put these on their Gear Cube.

They look nice but I feel the corners are crying out to be fish. An eye and a little mouth with the right colours.

Oskar gave the permission to me, for making stickers for the gear cube.
So soon they will be available in my sticker shop.
Maybe I'll make some picture cubes as well. Not just normal stickers.

Man! Now I am going to have to get a gear cube! The variation looks very nice, very sleek and cool.

As for the stickers, I have used Oliver's service a few times and have been amazed at the quality. (He made all my Squircifer stickers.)

I really have to stay away from here for a bit! Now I will never finish my mods till I have a Squircifer gear cube!

I made some more from the normal 3x3x3 sticker variations I have:

Obvious choice after the Earth cube:
Hexa world:

not too hard, but looks great:
4 and 8 color variations:

And my favorite:
The Tone gear cube!!! :shock:

(For this I needed to make a new design, because some new colors came in for the inner edges!)

And of course I can make a Squircifer gear cube... :roll:

i like the stickers it really brings out the puzzle to see it more. 1 of the main things of twisty puzzles is stickers the other is quality which is good too 8-)

Actually, now that I'm thinking about it, your are correct. PVC = PolyVinyl Chloride, duh :oops:

However, I often hear the stickers used by Rubik's for their puzzles being referred to as PVC, while the material that everyone appears to favor for custom made puzzles is referred to as vinyl, like the Cubesmith stickers and sheets.
So what exactly is Rubik's using nowadays? It's not the same material they used to use. The cube I got in 1981 when I was a kid still has the original stickers on it, and they feel a lot closer to the Cubesmith stickers than to whatever Rubik's has been using lately.

EDIT: The Gear Cube comes with " 6 color high quality Matt German Vinyl stickers."
EDIT2: That's what Meffert's uses, not Rubik's. Sorry for my misreading :oops:
