I was wondering if there would be a way to block moves, and decided on a truly evil idea for a Square-1 mechanism I call 1² (One-Squared)

The mechanism is shown on the left, and the pieces on the right. My concept is to have the mechanism have an extra rail on a few parts, creating blocks for the piece(s) without the hole for the rail. The idea behind this is to let almost all of the pieces pass over the block, but only a few pieces cannot.

The attachment doesn't show it well, but the extra rail only needs to be on a few parts of the circular mechanism, not the entire 360 Degrees.

I get it, that's sneaky! I like the idea!

couldn't this be done by hand?
just add some putty or something in the existing ridges of a sq1?

right now SQ-1 pieces are like the pieces that wouldn't be able to pass. You'd have to cut new slots into the SQ-1 pieces.

I still do not understand ...
I think if one piece is blocked, the whole layer is stucked...
Wait for 3D model.

Wait for 3D model.

The whole layer would stop moving, that piece wouldn't be able to get past the block. So you'd have a hidden limited movement.

Exactly. The idea is that you would be able to turn a layer to X degrees. Let's say that you would turn a layer to set up an algorithm. While turning one layer, you would be able to turn up to said X degrees. Suddenly, you can not turn the layer any more than it gets blocked to.

In the picture below, where the sections of the circle are highlighted, would be where the piece with an extra rail belong. You would be able to turn the piece that gets blocked anywhere between each caged off section.

So this is like the Nightmare Cube, only applied to a Square-1. i figured that it was only a matter of time before people took that concept to other cubes.

I have almost completed a CAD design of this puzzle. I don't intend to sell it, as it is your idea, and you deserve the rights to the puzzle. :) I can post pictures if anyone is interested.

Please do so, ArchWolf and I will be greatly pleased (mostly him  )

We are working together to crank out tons of new puzzle designs 8-)

On another note -- I am working on a mix of a Helicopter Cube and Dino Cube and almost have the dino part built in, but have run into many problems, mostly the core :?

I'm not entirely sure if this design will work, but it demonstrates the concept. :) I think the design may actually be slightly different than what Arch Wolf originally came up with, but I think this will work just the same. What is interesting is that there are dozens of ways to arrange the bandaged parts of the centers, edges and corners, creating multiple cube variants.

I hope the pictures are good enough that you can see the differences between the pieces. :)

And all but a few pieces would be cut deep enough to go past it. I like it!

Thank you for taking time to design this concept, Cheese_Board. This is almost exactly what I envisioned, but with about 1-2 more blocks in the mechanism.

As for permission to sell, by all means go for it. Any of my ideas are open to anybody for anything that they would wish to do. Just because I came up with an idea doesn't mean that it strictly belongs to me. All I ask from anybody is to mention my name with the prototype/finished puzzle in a post. Whether it's "Concept by -" or "Designed by -", I don't really care. I just want to be noted that the concept was mine.

No problem! :) I just did this for fun, and maybe so I could print a model of this for myself.

Because of all of the different ways of arranging the hidden blocks, I thought it might be an interesting idea to make a Co-creator template on Shapeways for this puzzle, allowing the buyer to customize how they want the puzzle bandaged. For the images posted earlier, I only put in one block in the image as a sample.

I was waiting for somebody to figure out there is a great number of puzzles you can make with this design just by rearranging the blocks.
