Hi Twisty Puzzle fans,

If you look at the Shapeways 3D puzzle theme page, you see that it is completely cluttered by individual pieces of puzzles, see also the screen shot below.

It would be so much easier if Shapeways would support composite models.

Suppose twisty puzzle X has four different parts:
-X-core (1 needed per puzzle X)
-X-center (6 needed per puzzle X)
-X-edge (12 needed per puzzle X)
-X-corner (8 needed per puzzle X)

My approach is to upload a single STL file with 27 pieces. This works only if I keep the resolution low to remain below Shapeways 500.000 triangle upload limit. And it costs Shapeways a lot of server space to have all the redundant pieces. For bigger models, like Void 6x6x6 or Over The Top 17x17x17 this does not work at all, which is why I cannot sell them from my Shapeways Shop.

Some of our puzzle friends upload the individual pieces. This saves Shapeways server space and allows one maximal resolution per piece. But it will quite a job for the puzzle buyers to buy the right set and quantity of puzzle pieces, especially as there is not a single place where one can provide the buying instructions, let alone a single-click purchase. And it clutters the shop and theme pages.

I would like to have support for composite models. So one could order in one click a full set of pieces to build a puzzle, or in one click a full set of master parts.

I made a post on this at the Shapeways Forum. If you agree with me and if you would like to see support for composite models too, then please post a response here.

I would love to see this implemented, but I am worried about the $1.50 fixed fee like I posed on the Shapeways forum.

The model page clutter annoys me a lot. I think that a lot of the clutter could be avoided by requiring a model to have at least one user-submitted picture before it would be allowed on.
