Thanks for the citation. They look great, but I think you got a little over-zealous with the sanding for the fillets on the cube!

Be careful when turning the cube. The force you will apply to turn it will be farther out from the original turning plane. Thus, there will be a longer lever arm, and more torque away from the turning plane. This makes it more likely to become derailed from the internal mech!

I can't wait to see a tetrahedron! That's going to be a huge puzzle.

I don't believe the Masterball can jumble but watching these videos made me realize that it should be able to jumble. It looks like you should be able to turn one of the cuts that goes through the poles by 90 degrees and then be able turn through the cut at the equator. I thought puzzles that jumbled pretty much jumbled unless something was added to the mech which prevended it. I not familiar with the Masterball mech... any ideas why it doesn't jumble? Or could it easily be modded to allow jumbling?

If you ever get a chance to try out a masterball, you will understand almost immediately why this move won't work. It looks like it is possible, but it is not.

Try this: Think about a 2x2x4. It has the same kinds of cuts as a masterball, except it doesn't have the diagonal cuts on the top and bottom faces. If the 2x2x4 is fully-functional, then you can make any 90-degree turn at any time. The masterball puzzle is like a 2x2x4 where only 180-degree turns are allowed on the vertical cuts.

The reason for this is that the internal mechanism is actually simply a puck puzzle with 8 sections that are shaped like orange slices, which stretch from the top to the bottom of the puzzle. The latitudinal rings on the masterball are formed by tiles that slide around in tracks that are carved into these 8 sections. Since each "orange slice" is solid, from pole to pole of the masterball, it cannot make the turn you described above.

It's interesting that you mentioned a 2x2x4. I think it's possible to mod a 2x2x4 so it superficially looks like an octahedral Masterball.

These are awesome. However I don't understand one thing. The Masterball can also be turned after a 45° degree turn of one of the 4 slices right? So the cube could change its shape couldn't it?

Yeah, it should.

Absolutely. All those puzzles in the first post change shape. The only one that doesn't is the original masterball.

When I get home I'm going to model a tetrahedron with the masterball cuts and play with it a bit. I can't imagine it in my head right now, but I sorta can, you know?
