I hope the third version of the crazy 4x4 gets produced. That's the only one I have any real interest in.

Arg!!! Out of stock already? I guess that's a good thing as I'm unemployed at the moment. I got version 1 as soon as it came out which means I got a white one. Anyone know if these will be available in white too?

These Crazy 4x4x4 II look very interesting indeed. Looks like it amounts to solving permutation and orientation of centers, which could get messy if you encounter any parity...

Any any rate, this certainly looks like a classy mechanism. Looks like I have to add this puzzles to my wishlist.

Puzzle was back in stock with 1 left - and I just bought it! :) But check back, perhaps they are adding more?

I noticed that this morning and almost jumped on it myself. I really should get a job first plus I'm rather get a white one to go with my white version 1. Then again if I get a job I'll likely just get the black version 1 and 2 together and call that my matching set.

This is the one I've been waiting for, too.

Looks like I'll still be waiting. I agree with blackjack, though. The 3rd one looks amazing too.

Is anything beyond what's on the mf8 shop page known about these mass-produced crazy II's? Like, should we expect them to show up on c4u like the first one?

Got mine today and I have to say I'm disappointed. See the picture. Tiles were coming off (luckily I found them in the package). Also, you can see where glue leaked out around the sides of other tiles and kind of made a mess. Overall turning is nice, but even if I want to sticker this guy, I'm going to have to fill in the holes with something first because they are indented. Just FYI.

I'm not getting the version II:

* I'm happy with my version I.

* It doesn't look like the mechanism would turn as well, though that remains to be seen.

* I think the way the "married pairs" travel around the cube would just confuse me to no end.

* It's more expensive, and I've got to stop buying stuff.

* I want them to produce a Crazy 5x5x5

Hopefully, mf8 or someone will eventually produce the Crazy 5x5x5. The circle would be inside the 3x3 square area, although a completely new 5x5x5 mechanism will have to be created based on the Crazy I mech.

LOL, looks like the new variety is of the snickered kind. Sad for the people who ordered the first one before now. I had a China Minx once with embedded tiles and it sucked royally. Glue on tiles (like Mefferts) are much higher in quality then the snap in variety.

Version 3 is released? How much is it? The price on that page is $0.00. But consider there is no difference from version 2 in terms of solving, I will probably not buy it.

Actually, version III looks to be quite a bit different in terms of solving. The difference between version II and III is that the circle has been enlarged to include parts of the corner pieces.

After hearing about what version II is like, I think I might just skip II and get III instead :?

It's not. Versions II, III, and IV are all Super 4x4x4 Multicubes. Here are some pictures I made which show that:

Version III
Image

Version IV
Image

I don't have a picture for version 2 but it just takes the external stickers off the 4x4x4 face center cubies that are seen in the pic for version IV. As they still have 2 stickers on the sides you can still super-solve these pieces. Version I just has the single external sticker on the 4x4x4 face centers so its a Normal 4x4x4 Multicube.

Those corner pieces you mention in version III just show you a side of the 4x4x4 edge pieces. So once you've solved all the edges these pieces will be solved too.

Carl

P.S. Even knowing this I still plan on getting all 4 versions myself.

They're checkout system is pretty much broken anyway, if you live in the US or Canada, because the drop down menu for state/province only says "please select" and there are zero options to select for state. Then if you try to check out anyway by squeezing your state name in the street address or postal code area, all goes well until you get to the Paypal site, where it refuses your order due to "invalid postal address." I would consider that to be "broken" by design.

BTW, unless it's a total robot that physically packages and ships each invoice, anyone with half a brain would say, "hmmm, $0.00 USD - something screwy about this invoice; maybe I should investigate." But on the bright side, if they do actually charge, process, and ship a zero dollar transaction, they've but little recourse to reclaim it once it leaves the post office.

Reminds me of a story, once my mom got a statement from a company she had done business with, that read she owed $0.00, with instructions to send payment, so she ignored it because she didn't owe anything. Then later on, she got an "overdue" notice that she still needed to pay the same $0.00; she ignored that one too. A couple weeks later, she got an urgent "Final Notice" that she needed to send payment of $0.00 by such a date or they would charge her a late penalty fee and turn her over to a collections agency. So she finally sent them a check for $0.00, and the following week she got confirmation the balance had been paid. When she got her bank statement for the following month, the $0.00 check had actually cleared!

Well it seems that version III has been removed, at least for the time being. BTW Carl is right. version II, III, and IV are all mathematically identical. That is if you perform exactly the same moves on all three simultaneously, solving any one of them guarantees that the other 2 will get completely solved as well. All 3 simulate a supersuper 4x4 cube, with orientation and permutation required on all 64 mathematical pieces.

Type IV displays everything in probably the clearest way, while II removes the piece that can be used to most easily identify the 4x4 face centers (but still leaves enough to uniquely identify all 24 of them). Type III is just type II plus a handful of redundant (but visually confusing pieces). However, just ignoring these pieces works. So in terms of difficulty I would have to rate them from clearest to most confusing: IV, II, III even though they're all EXACTLY THE SAME.

But the point of my post: there are currently 4 crazy 4x4 type II's in stock right now!!!! I already got mine so I won't be taking any of them. Just thought I'd let those of you who keep missing it know. Hurry before they're all claimed!

Peace,
Matt Galla

Are you sure they are mathematically the same - see the attached picture. The little piece above the circle on the Type II is not the same as in your picture:

And.. despite the bad luck with the tiles, I decided to buy a type III also - since the price was 0.00 how could I not? :)

I only pictured types III and IV above as I had never made images like those for types I and II. To be complete I just did that and here they are:

Version I: Note the 4x4x4 face centers only have 1 sticker on their surface so this is a Normal 4x4x4 Multicube.
Image

Version II: Note all cubies have at least 2 stickers on their surface so this is a Super 4x4x4 Multicube as are III and IV (seen above).

I figured that's what it would be, with the little "corner" bit of the circle missing.

that's interesting... So... there's no way to make a 4x4 circle cube that offers anything more than the first crazy 4x4 with super stickers, or a super multicube?
Just a thought Carl, would there be a way to create a kind of sides-only or virtual 6x6 face center on the 6x6 multicube, kind of like the 2nd crazy 4x4 does?
Perhaps that would be a solution to the 6x6 multicube problem.

Just to let you know: I've received my Crazy 4x4x4 Type II yesterday (in Germany; ordered December 6).
It has arrived in perfect condition. The tiles are like the ones from Cubesmith, really not so bad.
Turning is equally good as that of my the type I. Only a few locks, but I've only solved it once.
My overall judgement: I'm glad that I've bought it. Very nice puzzle.

A little warning about crazy cube II:

If a tile from the center pieces falls off (wich happens very easily), pay much attention on how you glue it again!!

avoid to put any glue near the inner circle! Believe it or not, it is another different piece (around which the square piece moves up and down)!!

You are right : there is only 2 mathematically different crazy 4x4x4 cube.
Crazy 4x4x4 II, III and IV are mathematically equivalent.

For the crazy 3x3x3 there are two non-trivial cubes (but I think they are equivalent).

I think your cubie counts are wrong, but yes those are the only non-trivial ones and they are equivalent.

I am counting "apparent" cubies on each face...
PS : I have edited the picture.

I believe there are three, but the third is equivalent to these two. Make the circle just a bit smaller and you'll expose the 9th face cubie and keep the 5 cubies in the circle.

The 9th face cubie would be 4 seperate corner pieces on a physical cube but there would be no way to seperate them by turning the puzzle.

Yes, but as you say these extra cubies can't be separated from the centre.

I have talk about two "non-trivial cubes". This one is a trivial variation of the first one in my list.

Ok... I see how you are looking at it. I was looking at it as a 3x3x3 multicube and seeing I could sticker the outer face of the face centers with the smaller circle. What appears to the be face center on your two versions is actually a stickered face of the central cubie, the one you can't see on a normal 3x3x3.

In that case if these were circle picture cubes then the third version I've shown would be considered non-trivial. But in that case you could also make the circle even smaller such that there was just one cubie seen in the center and still have a non-trivial circle picture cube.

Yes, you are right, with pictures instead of colors it would be different (because the rotation of the extra cubies would be visible).

And the idea of a pictured crazy cube with one very little circle in the middle of the central cubie of each face is great...
