EDIT - Just added a video! I ended up taking the puzzle apart, breaking the core in a few places (an extreme version of "breaking in" a puzzle) and improved the movement a bit! After I tried the improved movement, I decided to make a post a video after all. This is still the V2. Version 2.5 is still to come. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7jx0tZ1eCYThis is version 2 of the Pentultimate! It uses an entirely new mechanism. It's not a knucklehead, shells mech, or crystal buildup. (I'll likely try a shells version soon though. ) This is the version 2 of the mechanism I thought of while assembling version 1, and mentioned here. This one also includes stickers just for Tony Fisher.Movement is reliable, but not smooth yet. If movement on the last version was a 05/100 (5 out of 100), then I'd give this one a 60/100 (60 out of 100). It does work, it's just tight on some turns and not others. In fact, I'd consider this the first really working Pentultimate, since version 1 broke very soon after being made. But the issues have very obvious fixes, so the really good news is that I'm into the next version's (V2.5) design already, and I'm feeling very optimistic based on this prototype. Because of the tightness, and since I'm working on a fix, I'm not going to post a video right now. But here's a sample review if I DID post a video "Wow, it's tight on some turns and smoother on others." I've included a couple of size comparison pics too! It's a bit smaller than V1. Now, back to V2.5!

Very nice work Does this indicate a possibility for a much simpler mechanism of 24 cube?

Yay! Any plans to get V2.5 produced in quantities larger than one?

Beautiful puzzle!
And not to hijack this thread, but what exactly are knucklehead and shell mechs?

To be honest I have to say that this is one of the few puzzles that I think looks better with tiles... not sure why - Maybe I'm just used to seeing it that way?

Congratulations, great work! I've been eagerly awaiting this update. News of a nicely turning Pentultimate before the end of the decade has been my hope, and here we are with 19 days to spare!

Jason,
your Pentultimate is an outstanding design and I think it gave a lot of impulses to other builders to walk on new paths. Your V2 looks excellent and so I can only hope, that sooner or later it will be able to buy a Pentultimate of whatever version it will have then. As soon as you're happy with your design and want to sell one of your puzzles, please let me know.
Best regards, congratulations and my full respect (as for your Radiolarian)!
Frank

I hope you have a online retailer to sell them with them both working like the second one and also looking like the first one also. I love black plastic and huge tiles like on the first one.

The first one was crazy, the knucklehead mech and all the work you put into putting it together was crazy.
Hopefully this mech made things easier for you.

Oh hey BTW... once you get the design all finished and stuff, an icosahedral shape mod of this would be super interesting, if you feel like it.

Actually looks relatively easy to do once the puzzle is built. You would only need one extra part (center cap) instead of casting the corner caps.

Hey, Jason. This is a wonderful puzzle. It looks as beautiful as could be. But when will you be done with fixes of this prototype? I could say: "I really don't want to hassle you." But, well, I do! Can you imagine that I have been suffering for quite a while now seeing these pictures but no video? One could say that I am dying. HURRY!

In a marathon design session last week, I finished the version 2.5 files, which ended up being almost a do-over, and ordered some parts. I'm hoping to have something to look at before the end of the year if all goes well, but I won't promise anything for sure!
