Ok. Just got mine through the post - a proper barrel cube from the 80's rather than a modern custom mod. It came scrambled.

Solved it once (as a 3x3 - noticing that a corner was flipped, I popped it and replaced it). Came to solve it the second time and the same thing happened.

First time I thought someone had popped it in the past and reassembled it incorrectly. So it surprised me that it happened again.

Then I found that swapped edges and flipped edges can happen on the barrel. I come to find a guide to solving it when that happens - zip. Nada. Not a sausage. I can't find a guide that tells me what to do.

Anyone help? I have managed to solve it since (I just flipped it over and solved starting with the Gold cross instead of the white.

Already been there. He doesn't really explain the methodology. My case involved 2 adjacent edges, not opposite ones, and there's also no explaination of exactly HOW to flip a single edge.

Do you need an exact how to? It's a puzzle, isn't it? This is all you need to know:

You have no way of seeing what orientation the middle layer edges have.
There are multiple ways to position the colours of the truncated sides.

If that's not enough, then have a look at this:

To solve the orientation, just take out one of the middle layer edges, replace in in the other orientation and then resolve the last layer. That's the easiest way to do it.

To solve the permutation you need to take out a corner from the first layer, insert it in another 'slot' and continue the solve from there.

Oh I can probably solve it with a bit of trial and error. But that's no help to speed solving it. A simple edge flipper alg or swapper alg would go a long way.

Plus... Have a look at what exactly???

**Edit** Scratch that. Found the hidden text. But it still doesn't help I'm afraid. I don't want to solve by disassembly.

Wait? You think I suggested disassembly? Comon....

I meant to "take out an edge" as in placing a different edge in the slot.

To swap two adjacent edges, simply do the swap described on my page. This leaves you with a position where three edges are wrong. This can be solved the same as on a normal cube.

To apparently flip a single edge, you must also flip one (or three) of the edges in the middle layer (assuming those are the flat edge pieces with one colour).
One way to do this is (ER)4, where E is an eastwards turn of the middle layer.

Thanks for the edge swapper alg. That really helps. :D

I don't follow you with the "(ER)4, where E is an eastwards turn of the middle layer." bit. Can you elaborate please?
