I would also like to see it at the next meetup. How big is one edge along the curve (vertex to vertex)? How much does it weigh? How stable is the design? Is the spider big enough to have its own health bar?

When Drew says you will see a " better one" soon, I think he is just saying that you will soon see a better video than the one I sent him directly which he has already seen. In that video, the puzzle wasn't stickered yet, and I just made a few turns. I don't think he's talking about another petaminx build.

in all honesty im not trying to be argumentative i swear. but i think we are both correct. of course, in his omnipotence he may come down from the heavens and smash my theory to pieces with a gold stellated teraminx, but i believe he is making one, its a half hunch/ half evidence thing. but i cant wait to see the videos nonetheless. you did a great job and i think its a beautiful minx. and i cant wait for more of them to be built, (hopefully drew shows up with a peta v2 thats the size of a grapefruit and turns like it was full of butter)

Superb. Amazing build quality. It looks like it will work pretty well. I can't wait to see a video.

Three key factors would stop me building one.

I couldn't design it. Great design work Drewseph.

My casting skills are not up to it. (Still improving though).

There is absolutely no way in this world or any other that I would have the patience and determination to (a) cast nearly 1000 pieces (b) assemble it (c) sticker it. For that alone, a one-person build of this quality deserves..... well I'm not sure what.... certainly the acclamation of everybody here.

Congratulations io!

......there is also no way I would have the patience to solve it. The very thought is putting me off my lunch!

Nah, all the numbers he has are right. I was wrong way back then because I didn't take into account some other parities (that number is 4 times the correct number because I didn't consider wing and corner permutation parities).
By the way the formula for the total number of positions of an n-layer *minx (for petaminx n=4) is:
30! * 20! * 60!^(n^2-1) * 5!^(-12n^2+12n) * 2^(28-n) * 3^19

That thing actually works. More.............. It works well. I cannot believe that something so complex is so forgiving and stable.

An amazing feat of designing and building. I bet Drewseph is chuffed to bits with this (I'm sure he got a preview of the vid!)

Agreed. I was shocked at how stable it was given all of the potential for error in the building/construction process.

If this number is right, then there are 10^496 times the number of permutations that you guessed. A number no human will ever be able to understand. Let alone the 10^996 itself.
Guessing with exponents especially in this range is actually pretty useless.
You would think 10^500 is about 10^501 but then you notice, well it's not at all it is infact 10 times more!
Insane to think of it.

Anyway the video is so awesome. Perfect puzzle.
And yes you should scramble it. I think it shouldn't take more than 30 hours to solve.
You would have a stopwatch for that puzzle and to make sure write down all the times.
And after some weeks or so you would be done solving. I think spending more than 3 hours a day solving it would be not fun any more.
Anyway. At the end you would put into your signature: PETAMINX: 27:15:46.62 hrs

It is well in excess of a Centillion(10^303 short-scale, 10^600 long-scale), which is where most lists of big number end(excluding Googolplex). Extending beyond a Centillion, I would dub the number of possibilities as little more than Three tricentuntrigintillion(assuming I have the right multiple of 3 zeros) in the short-scale.

So the Question is: How many possibilities do the theoretical Exa- Zetta- and Yotta-minxes have? And will we ever see them in physical form?

It went just like this.

My one year old must have thought it was a ball. He was pretty excited and apparently he's got quite an arm.

The puzzle flew about 5 feet to hit the hardwood floor. The two centers that took the impact had to be replaced.

Before anyone worries too much, remember this happened BEFORE I made the video. So all is well. But there were a few delirious hours in the early morning last night.

Jason- is that a "version 2" petaminx? As in, Drew's second design with the inner shell? From that last pic, I would have expected to be able to see all the way into the center of the puzzle.
