Look, 3x3x3. We've had a lot of fun together. Remember the first time I learned to do second layer on a Chex cube? I was so excited. We've had some really good times. It's been fun.

What's it been, 20 years? Almost 30? Wow, how time flies.

Anyway... I've changed. I have evolved, and no amount of sticker variation can satisfy me anymore. It's not you at all, you're still as great as ever, as long as you don't have a riveted core.

I need new challenges. Maybe it's not all about cubes. Who says all axes have to have the same number of cuts? You know? You know I love jumbling, and that's not something you'll ever be able to do.

I realize that this might be a bit of a shock. I'll visit. Maybe we can get sub-20 someday. But for now, I want a cube with partial turns in the solved state. I've always wanted to try turning edges, too.

We'll still be friends. You're a great puzzle and you deserve someone who will memorize all 600 something Friddich algorithms.

Yes, but it would be quite larger then this. Also, after you buy the 6x6x6 and do all the work to bandage it (take it apart, glue pieces together, fill in the gaps, sand and paint as necessary, cut stickers) you wouldn't be saving any money considering the amount of work it would take.

I purchased my first ever 4x4x4 cube today. Will I ever go back to my beloved 3x3x3? Damn right I will! Rebuilding and repositioning the centres is bad enough, but the whole p-p-parity problem is just too much!! See? I can't even say the word without stuttering!

It's okay. I can now solve the 4x4x4 and I only had to memorise 3 new algorithms; one to match up the last three edge pieces and two to correct the parity! So, will I go back to the 3x3x3? Well yes, but the 4x4x4 is a 3x3x3. It's also a 2x2x2. Now that's value for money!

I now have to get my mits on a 5x5x5.

Cubic 3x3x5...super duper awesome.

On an off topic about 4x4: screw 4x4. Go for the 5x5 it is more impressive, and easier to solve.

I have to admit that the 4x4x4 always scared me a little because of the non-fixed centres and the parity problem. But, in contrast, the 5x5x5 has more centre and edge pieces to restore. That's why I was never sure which one to buy first.

But then fate intervened. I walked into a shop less than a week ago and there it was. A single 4x4x4 sitting alone on the shelf. This was the only time I'd ever seen a cube bigger than a 3x3x3 in the flesh, so to speak, so I bought it. I don't regret it.

Restoring the edges is easy (first nine edges solved with no algorithms, next three solved using one short algorithm), restoring the centres is done with absolutely no algorithms (although ironically, this part takes the most concentration) and the parity problem isn't a problem if you know a decent memory technique (a further two algorithms are required).

But the best thing is, now I've learned to solve the 3x3x3 and the 4x4x4, all cubes from 2x2x2 to 11x11x11 (which I believe is the current physical limit) are now solvable. Cool!

And apologies if I've taken this thread off topic. I'll rectify that shortly.

If a puzzle were a person then the more famous the puzzle, the more attractive the person.

The difficulty of a puzzle means nothing in this particular analogy.

To the general non-puzzling public, the bog standard 3x3x3 Rubik's cube is the most beautiful person in the world. That is, until you reveal to them that there are bigger and more complicated versions (4x4x4, 5x5x5 etc). The bigger the cube, the prettier it becomes. But that's only because it's a recognisable extension of the 3x3x3.

All other puzzles, regardless of their difficulty, are ugly compared to the Rubik's cube, simply because of their lack of fame.

So why do we continue to solve these 'ugly' puzzles?

Personally speaking, I don't. I'm heavily into the Rubik's cube and that's about it (apart from the Rubik's magic which is just, well, magic)

But why do the rest of you continue to solve non-Rubik's puzzles?

I'm not trying to insult anyone, I'm just curious as to why we put our efforts into solving some puzzles and not others. In other words, where do we draw the line?

The way you put it was rather insulting. its obvious though, because these puzzles are NEW and they ARE beautiful.

There is nothing like the excitement you feel when the postman rings the bell. There is nothing like the cutting of that tape when the box comes in the door. There is nothing like the pure joy you feel when you first lay eyes on and grab that new puzzle. There is nothing like the way your brain starts twitching when you have a new challenge. And finally, there is nothing like that smell associated with old and new plastic. (unless it comes from a non-smoke free home)

For example me eagerly waiting my ghost cube and for Jason to update the quantity available on the cubic 3x3x5. I come home everyday and run to the door to see if there's a package waiting for me. It's the best feeling in the world to open that box and see/handle a puzzle for the first time, for me anyways. Well said Roxanne!

And if yes, guess what I do! Yes, I'll take my car and drive to the office to get it *immediatly*.

I have two boxes I'm eagerly waiting for. One from Georges that I'm pretty sure won't arrive until early next week, and have my helper prepared to call me when it comes in so I can suddenly become sick.

The other has a DHL tracking number and I've been refreshing that page every few minutes since 3 pm today because it's at the processing hub. I will squeel with glee when that changes to "with delivery courier". I may even have to be sick tomorrow morning if that is when it gets passed over.

I think a long awaited Cheese, Stern, and Rotascope are all just too much for me to go to work (or stay in work) for.

And I'm fairly certain the week after I'll have to be ill again when I get the call about Calzone's and Flambore's boxes!!!

I've been told that all of these boxes have a "smell" with them.

I think you missed the point of this entire thread. Did you follow the link in the first post? It was a clever way to introduce the sale of a cube shapped 3x3x5 (which by your own definitions would be considered a beautiful puzzle because it is a more complex version of the 3x3x3) an also the ghost cube (which is a shape changed 3x3x3 and therefore also a beautiful puzzle by your definition).

A agree with Shua and Garrett, go troll somewhere else. The opening of the http://www.thetwistystore.com and the sale of these 2 puzzles is quite exciting and has nothing to do with your rants. And by coming into this thread and ranting like you did you were insulting to the people who started this store to sell these puzzles as well as those of us are are excited about it and have either purchased them or want to.

I already got both the 3x3x5 and the Ghost Cube and found some time to play with them. They are both very nice puzzles.

The 3x3x5 turns very well, the thin layers give nearly the same feeling as "normal" ones. Of course "vertical" turns (as R, L) are a little bit rougher, because of the complexer mechanism. I never had the feeling, that a piece could pop out. The cube looks very stable and also the outer corners keep in place. They are not to tight, not too loose - just perfectly adjusted. And they are lying flat on the other layers, so there is no space between the top corners and the second layer. The puzzle has still some slight problems with bubbles under the sticker, but I found this tolerable for the moment, especially considering, that I got a second set of stickers for it. Jason already offered me to fix this even before the puzzle arrived! Personally I would prefer, if the sticker corners are a rounded a little bit more, but this is more my personal taste.
Overall a very recommendable puzzle.

The Ghost Cube is a completely different idea (except they are both cubes) , using the idea of uniquely formed pieces as the Golden Cube adapting it to the 3x3x3. Although being a 3x3x3, it is quite difficult to solve, because you get lost very easily when you are not concentrating on your algorithms. The pieces are also of very high quality and allow smooth twists. Because of the irregular shapes you have to make quite exact turns, otherwise the pieces might get locked with each others. As the 3x3x5 the stickers also have some small bubbles, but this is not really visible due to the black colour. And the puzzle comes with a second set of stickers, too. The smallest stickers are probably fixed with super glue, but I would recommend to do this also with the larger ones or polish the surface even more, because I made the experience, that two of them fell off during my play. But that's nothing, one couldn't do by him/herself.
I am also very happy with this puzzle.
