OK, here are some pictures of a Radiation symbol in the lighter blue:
Image
I also cut a puzzle body in clear dark blue, which looks nice:
Image
Here is how the pieces look on the blue body:

and on a black body:
Image
I think the blue body is really neat, but with the blue pieces it doesn't make much sense. They might as well be clear, as you lose the blue color on that background.

Enjoy,

Dave

Dude, I never liked sliding puzzles, but what you have here is something beautiful. I dig the red biohazard symbol, especially with the black background, that puzzle would be totally worth $75. I want one, however I need to make sure I'll be able to save enough for some V-cubes when they come out. (I hear they're even more expensive) But most likely I'll get one soon. Where do I make my order?

Thanks for the interest! Check the very first post of this thread (here) for how to order (PM or email).

Elemental:Neon, Deluxe BioHazard version:
Image
See this link in the Puzzle Building forum for more pictures and details.

The Deluxe version requires more parts to be etched and so costs an extra $25.

If you are on the wait list and want to upgrade to Deluxe just send me a PM or email.

Dave

P.S. If you want a Deluxe version of any of the other images I can probably do that as well, I haven't mapped any of them out yet. Radiation would probably look good and possibly Toxic, but I'm not sure it makes sense for Chemical.

I thought I would post a quick update on how things are going.

Things slowed down at the end of the year because the TechShop was so overbooked. Things have picked up a bit, there has been more access and they have a new laser cutter on line (but the old is now off line, so still only one available). You may have noticed that I have completed a few puzzles and the order list is moving again (although I still get more orders than I can build these days).

I just completed an order with a laser cutting company to cut about 1700 parts to build 50 puzzles. This should really help me make progress with the wait list. I still have to etch countersinks, back plates and cut and etch pieces, but that is quite a bit less work than doing all the cutting at the TechShop. I can't wait to pick them up (the cutting shop is 90 minutes away and open only during the work week), hopefully some time this week.

I chose to go with opaque black for the stock body color. I liked the look of the two I built for Geert, and had some other positive responses. See the middle of this post and the following few posts to see some information about the black vs. smoke grey acrylic body.

Take a look on the Puzzle Building site here and here for some examples of custom work I've been recently doing. Remember, if you are on the wait list and want to change to do something special, just email or pm me. If I haven't built yours yet I am happy to discuss doing something special.

I'll update again once I have more info,

Dave

It looks like production is going to do very good, Dave. Thanks For the order change, too.

A bit of an update, I have been making some progress on my order list, I have built about 40 of the 70 orders I have received since I started.
Lately I have been buildings lots of custom versions, see this thread for some pictures of recent custom varieties.

I had been working with a laser cutting shop to produce parts for me faster than I could cut them, but it did not work out :( (see this post and recent follow ups for details). I now have the some parts being cut by the TechShop so perhaps I can catch up with my orders a bit faster in the future.

On the more regrettable side of things I will be adjusting the price again. Cost of the TechShop membership just went up and the cost of fuel actually starts to make a difference when it is a 100 mile round trip to visit the TechShop. The amount of time I spend building the puzzle hasn't reduced much and it is a bit daunting to look at my order list at the current prices and imagine it getting larger.

So the new base price of the Neon is now $100. Unlike last time there will be no compromise price change for existing orders: The new price will only apply to orders I receive after this post (June 23,2008), which given the price bump may be none :) A slow down in orders won't hurt too much as it will allow me the chance to stop making Neons at some point and make a few of my other designs.

I haven't yet set new pricing for customizations, but that should follow shortly. Currently I am producing many custom puzzles and it isn't entirely clear from my existing posts how much they would cost given that I don't describe all the potential options.

Dave

Here are a few more custom puzzles (well, one is standard) I built this weekend.

To all those on the order list: Please take a look at the bottom of http://www.LitwinPuzzles.com and check your status. If you aren't marked "confirmed" yet, please contact me so I know exactly what to build for you. I have been building lots of custom puzzles and right now more than 10 people on the waiting list are choosing a custom design or out of contact. If I can't contact you or don't know what to build for you I will go on to the next person on the list and it helps me to plan if I have a few confirmed orders ahead of me.

Indeed it is (your status is "Built" on my site), but note that it doesn't have the packaging stickers. I have only one more (I use two per package) and am waiting on a new sheet that Adam Zamora cut last week.
I don't like to invoice until it a puzzle is *really* done and ready to ship, because you never know when things will be delayed and I wouldn't want to take someone's money then make them wait.

Progress on the larger Elemental puzzles has been stalled. With all those pieces it is too hard to keep them from locking up. They just shift all over. I need to spend some time tuning the one I have to move better to see if this helps it a little, but the larger designs may never work.

I have a few ideas to help stabilize the pieces, but they require a lot of work and I have to finish up my Neon orders as well as a few other projects I have in production (Kilominx and an un-announced build).

I hope one day to make larger Elementals, but more likely I will produce a different smaller Elemental with more chance of success on the existing mechanism. Fluorine and Beryllium-10 have some promise (see the puzzle building thread here for details).

It may be a while until I see mine (The Neon: Radiation Deluxe), because I'm on vaction. When I do get it though, I will not leave the house for maybe 3 weeks.

Just because I haven't given people enough options, I now offer inking of the etched portions of the puzzle:

Image
This is gold ink on the back plate of trixter's new Green/Gold Deluxe Neon.

Cost is an additional $10, and any orders not already shipped can have this added. Colors are pretty plentiful, but I recommend gold, silver or copper because the metalic ink looks quite nice.

I will also be able to ink etched puzzle pieces, which opens up many opportunities. I will post more about this (and pricing) after some tests.

More progress with inking. Here are some examples:
Image
Elemental:Neon Deluxe Radiation in magenta on Yellow *
Image
Image
Elemental:Neon BioHazard, red on black
Image
Image
Elemental:Neon TechShop custom blue and red on mother-of-pearl pieces

Price is $10 for the back plate, $10 for standard front and $15 for Deluxe front.
Extra colors and custom images will add to the cost, but pretty much at this point it is very special work so the cost would probably be per hour.

Enjoy,

Dave

Let me guess... this has to do with the... ecologists, right?

Very close :)

Neon #056 is made for our own PuzzleMaster42 who, if you have read the Who's Who thread, you will know is a Nuclear Engineer. So he wanted the proper Magenta on Yellow coloring.

He couldn't help suggesting we poke a bit of fun at the.drizzle, knowing New Zealand is (since 1987) a Nuclear Free Zone.
Having lived in or near Berkeley for the last two decades (OK, not quite: 19 years 51 weeks as of today) I also know Berkeley beat New Zealand by a year on a similar measure.

True, but did Berkeley manage to put an embargo against the US military in the process as well?

Put that it you pot and stew it! :)

We have a winner! New Zealand: 1 Berkeley: 0

So do I get a Little Chop as a consolation prize?

Here are a few new Neons I recently built, with animal themes. All use different colored layers and inking.

I posted about the Tiger themed Neon here in the Puzzle Building thread.

Just tonight I finished off two twin puzzles, YellowJacket and Hornet. The story behind these was that PuzzleMaster42 wanted the Yellow/Magenta Radiation themed puzzle, and on my first try I absentmindedly cut a yellow BioHazard symbol instead. So I had to re-cut his with the Radiation theme and with the BioHazard pieces I decided to mix half and half with a black body. A bit of black and yellow inking and we have some nice twin puzzles:
Image

I considered swapping pieces for a checker board look but it was too noisy:
Image
See my flickr page for some other checker boarding designs. In the end the standard coloring seemed best.

Pembo gets the Hornet ;)

Ooo. They look very nice Dave. Keep up the good work. :)

They remind me of the black radiation symbol on yellow background. Just wondering, is bio hazard a red symbol on a white background?
