I made this thread as a suggestion for Wayne's statement at the general topics forum. I wasn't able to get to Wayne's thread in time to post this idea so I will do it here. This idea I got from the smosh forums. It is a forum board for only people who have been at the forum for a certain amount of time or have been picked by anyone who is alreay a dedicated member and/or a moderator. This board will hopefully make an area for the people who take the forums seriously to make serious posts. The board will have the rules strikley enforced. Any unneeded threads will make the user who made them suspended or banned from the board. The only problem that I see is that once someone is admitted the may forget the ordinary forum, and that is not the intention. The regular threads should still be used commonly along with this new board. Tell me what you think. Enjoy, TheAtarian1

No doubt there will be a rule against quoting another user and highlighting their misspelled words in red!

Given that some more valued members seem to be turned off from the forum recently due to the influx of non puzzle related discussions, this might be a remedy that would be useful.

Interesting idea, but I don't think that rank should make you qualified for this board. We don't want to encourage people to post a bunch of random/ useless stuff.

Sandy and Wayne have dedicated a ton of time and effort to this site. A huge thank you goes out to them both. In addition to them, I think the site could use an additional, more active moderator. Preferably someone that checks the site at least daily to lock/close/move errant threads. A moderator could move threads to "Off Topic" when needed, or to a new "Newbie Questions" section. Add a section filter feature, and we're all set.

The effort of creating another forum then creating another member group, followed by setting up the permissions and then deciding who is allowed to go in there is not a quick fix remedy until a new mod is appointed.

As much as I don't like what this forum has become (or is becoming), and as much as I don't visit often just because of that, I don't think that any kind of special (sub)forum or segregation is a good solution. Ultimately the only real solution is strong moderation. I am absolutely sure of that.

As an admin of two forums, I can say for sure moderators are needed here.
I, along with some friends, own a private forum. While I can see how it could be good, I think for this community leaving so many people out could ultimately be a mistake. If not for the great posters and builders here, I'd have never gotten into twisty puzzles like I have. I think the community at large needs the VIP posters doing what they do publicly if we are going to continue to see things thrive.

While I do agree that there shouldn't be some "vip" forum, sheer volume has cost us quite a few of our older members who no longer visit the forum for one reason or another. After a personal discussion with one, they specifically cited the volume of "noise" generated on the forums as being a key reason they no longer visit.

There are many people who are new who know how to contribute immediately, but there are many of those who just spew junk all over the forums. Moderation is strongly needed before the forum degrades into just a bunch of newbies asking each other how to make a void cube.
I know Sandy's been busy, but please just assign them soon. Wayne can't do everything, and it seems like he may not even read all the topics anymore. I don't even bother reading stuff in speedsolving most of the time because it's so redundant.
I think if the newbies actually had their junk posts deleted and their subject lines changed if they were something like "Hey guys", they would either learn quickly or leave, both of which are beneficial.

Yeah, I don't visit here much anymore for the same reason. We still have the high-quality topics, but the average quality of topics has clearly decreased... I don't really agree with the idea of segregation as it is, but if it leads to better discussions and more meaningful posts it could be for the better.

I've really changed my mind now on this topic. I think that all that's needed to fix the problem is some heavy moderation.

Just stating for the record, as I get the occasional email regarding it... there is no DMB. This conversation was all tongue in cheek.

Folks, you're turning this into a confusing mess. Keep it simple!
Pembo got temporarily suspended from DMB for trying to hijack Georges DMB commemorative V-CUBE, pictured above, but somehow it still got misdirected and delivered to TheAtarian1 who really ought to send it to professorcube5x5 so he can return it to its rightful owner. joey somehow received the DMB commemorative cube intended for Joey, and Joey has been complaining bitterly in the DMB forum but joey hasn't been able to read the complaints because joey doesn't have DMB access, meanwhile Joey hasn't been able to complain directly to joey in the public forums because Joey was suspended from the public forums for talking about DMB.
Could it be any simpler??
