Done. Well, one very minor thing left. Then a video. For now, some pictures:

Ha! Another puzzle can be checked off of Noah's list!

Following the recent trend of people showing off their works-in-progress (which I really think is a great trend, by the way), I bring to you my REALLY roughed out version of a megaminx transformed into a pillowed tetrahedron. It's actually quite simple, the only real challenge was figuring out the initial geometry, in that I wanted to embed the mechanism in such a manner that wasn't arbitrary. Four veritces/faces, 12 planes of rotation, each vertex is formed by three surfaces... I think I made a reasonable choice.

It should be done in 2 - 5 weeks, I'll post some more pictures then.

Cheers!

Wow! That's impressive. I'm very eager to see this thing all polished and stickered!

And I'm honored to have you remember my thread from way back when. :D

Very, very nice.

I really like the curved tetrahedron shape, and it is nice to see more puzzles adapted to it.

Fantastic! Looks like it could be tricky solve - even if you're OK with the megaminx.

How many different shape pieces are there? Are there any pieces very similar but not the same?

Thanks all, glad you like it--I'm pretty happy with it so far as well, and I think this will turn out very well--partially due to the quality of the underlying puzzle. I'm using one of the new PVC-sticker megaminxes from cube4you, which with a little adjustment / lubrication is not too much different from a Mefferts megaminx--WAY better than those lousy tiled things!

It would seem that this transformation leads to seven distinct bits, none of which are similar to each other (i.e., no mirror image parts). Of those seven, only three are built-up, the rest are all built via material removal.

As for how I've built these up, I've used polyesther filler. However, the filler does not bond particularly well to ABS, so I first built a "cage" out of ABS bits for each build-up, and filled it in with polyesther--kind of like the way an airplane wing is built, only much less technical. This way, the filler cannot come free of the pieces, so I don't have to worry about an extention falling off.

Cheers!

Pardon the crude sketch, but I highlighted a couple centers, a few edges and a corner.

Gra! I was hoping nobody would ask about this...

No, I have not finished it yet. It got relegated to the bottom of a rather lengthy to-do list, and has been gathering dust. Pity, as there is only about 3-6 hours of work left on it, plus painting / stickering...

How utterly embarrasing!

Well, it was definitely worth the wait!

The quality looks great and I love the pattern of cuts. The original Megaminx is a lot easier to pick out than I thought it would be, now that it's painted and stickered.

Any chance of some brighter pictures? They're really dark and don't do the puzzle justice.

Wow. Thats an incredible amount of cutting planes for a tetrahedron. Nice work as usual, Matt!
