I'm considering using OpenSubdiv for making puzzles -

http://graphics.pixar.com/opensubdiv/

Specifically, my use case is that I'd like to be able to make a relatively low polygon count figure in OpenScad, because that this is slow as molasses, and then clean it up using OpenSubdiv. Which leads to the questions -

Is there a command line utility which will run OpenSubdiv on an stl file?

How well does it clean stuff up? Does it tend to add material, remove material, or a combination of the two? Does it preserve hard edges?

Does anybody have experience with this?

Hey Bram, I have never taken the time to fully understand the math, especially the math used to move the original mesh points.
But in practice, they remove material on convex meshes, and add material to concave meshes. Edges can be tagged with a hardness value to keep specific areas sharp, or at some sharpness value.

It is far from what I'm about to say, but intuitively, imagine adding points on faces and edges and averaging their positions (smoothing) according to specific rules. So in general, imagine smoothing.
